Kilimanjaro Routes
The most popular and scenic way up Kilimanjaro — five climate zones, the Barranco Wall, and high summit success. Choose from twelve ways to climb it below.
About the route
Nicknamed the “Whiskey Route” for its bold, rewarding character, Machame is the most popular path to the Roof of Africa. It approaches from the south and west, winding through five distinct climate zones — from lush rainforest to arctic summit — and past landmarks like the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, and the famous Barranco Wall.
Its natural “climb high, sleep low” profile makes it excellent for acclimatization, which is why it delivers strong summit success rates when climbed over seven days. It’s a trekking route — no technical climbing — but the scenery makes it feel like a proper expedition.
Below are all twelve ways we run the Machame Route, from budget-conscious group climbs to full luxury, plus combos that add a Serengeti safari or a Zanzibar beach stay.
