Private Machame Route Climb

The full Machame experience — the mountain’s most scenic route — run exclusively for you and your party, on your dates and at your pace.

Private — your party only Flexible 6–8 days Summit 5,895m from US$2,150 / person

Overview

The Machame climb, entirely your own

This is the classic Machame Route — the “Whiskey Route” — run as a fully private climb. No strangers, no fixed group schedule: just you, your chosen companions, and a dedicated guide team focused entirely on getting your party to the summit.

Because it’s private, everything flexes to you. Choose your own departure date, set the pace that suits your group, and pick the itinerary length — we recommend seven days for the best acclimatization, but six or eight are yours to choose. It’s the ideal way to climb for families, couples, friends, or anyone who values privacy and a personal touch.

You still get the full Machame experience: five climate zones, the Shira Plateau, the Barranco Wall, and sunrise on Uhuru Peak — simply on your own terms.

Day by day

Your private Machame itinerary

Below is our recommended 7-day private itinerary. As a private climb, it can be shortened, extended, or paced to suit your group.

1Day

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

~11 km5–7 hrs1,640m → 2,835mRainforest

After your private briefing and transfer to Machame Gate, you begin climbing through dense, lush rainforest alive with birdsong. A steady first day brings you to Machame Camp for your first night under canvas.

2Day

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

~5 km4–6 hrs2,835m → 3,750mMoorland

The forest gives way to open moorland and giant heather. A shorter but steeper day, with the summit coming into view as you cross onto the Shira Plateau.

3Day

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp, via Lava Tower

~10 km6–8 hrsup to 4,630mSemi-desert

A key acclimatization day: you climb high to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. “Climb high, sleep low” helps your body adjust and sets you up for the summit.

4Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

~5 km4–5 hrs3,960m → 3,995mAlpine desert

The day starts with the iconic Barranco Wall — a fun, non-technical scramble that rewards you with sweeping views. A short day to Karanga Camp, this extra night adds valuable acclimatization on the 7-day itinerary.

5Day

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

~4 km4–5 hrs3,995m → 4,673mAlpine desert

A steady climb to Barafu, the summit base camp. You arrive early, eat well, and rest through the afternoon and evening — because tonight, you climb.

6Day

Summit day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, then to Mweka Camp

~17 km12–16 hrs4,673m → 5,895m → 3,068mArctic → forest

You set off around midnight for the long climb to Stella Point and on to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — for sunrise. After your summit photos, you descend all the way to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.

7Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, and transfer to your hotel

~10 km3–4 hrs3,068m → 1,640mRainforest

A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. We then transfer you back to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration.

Questions

Frequently asked

What makes this a “private” climb?

Your climb is run exclusively for you and the people you book with — no other travellers are added to your group. You get a dedicated guide team, your own departure date, and the freedom to set your own pace.

Can I choose the number of days?

Yes. We recommend seven days on Machame for the best acclimatization, but as a private climb you can opt for six or eight days to suit your group’s fitness and schedule.

Do I need climbing experience?

No. Machame is a non-technical trek — there’s no rope work or climbing skill required. The main challenge is the altitude, which our itinerary is designed to manage.

Is the price per person?

Yes. Private-climb pricing depends on your group size and dates — smaller groups cost a little more per person. Send us an enquiry and we’ll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote.

Can I add a safari, Zanzibar, or an upgrade?

Absolutely. A private climb is easy to personalise — add a Serengeti safari, a Zanzibar beach stay, or a VIP or Kosovo Camp upgrade, all arranged by our team.
