About the route
The long way around Kilimanjaro, with more mountain in every direction
The Northern Circuit begins on Kilimanjaro's western side and follows the Lemosho approach before crossing the Shira Plateau. After the high point around Lava Tower, the route turns north toward Moir Hut, then circles clockwise through the remote northern slopes before joining the eastern summit approach.
Its defining advantage is time. The standard 9-day version gives trekkers more opportunity to adjust to altitude while experiencing a wide range of landscapes, including rainforest, moorland, the Shira Plateau, high alpine desert and the northern side of the mountain.
The summit is reached from the School Hut side, with the descent continuing through the southern Mweka route. The Northern Circuit is therefore less about rushing to the top and more about experiencing Kilimanjaro as a complete mountain journey.
