Route overview

A longer, wilder approach from the west — and the best odds of summiting

The Lemosho Route begins on the quiet western side of Kilimanjaro at Londorossi Gate, climbing through pristine rainforest before opening onto the vast Shira Plateau. From there it crosses the mountain’s southern circuit and summits from Barafu Camp via Stella Point to Uhuru Peak.

Its length is its strength. The extra days and the classic “walk high, sleep low” profile give your body real time to acclimatize, which is exactly why Lemosho posts one of the highest summit success rates on the whole mountain.

It’s also the most beautiful route on Kilimanjaro, taking you through every one of its dramatic climate zones with far fewer crowds in the early days than the busier routes.

Why choose Lemosho

Four reasons climbers pick this route

Highest success rate

The generous acclimatization profile means more climbers reach Uhuru Peak than on the shorter, faster routes.

The most scenic route

Rainforest, the sweeping Shira Plateau, the Barranco Wall, and glaciers — Lemosho shows you the whole mountain.

Excellent acclimatization

The high Shira Plateau and the Lava Tower “climb high, sleep low” day prepare your body properly for the summit.

Quieter in the early days

The remote western start means peaceful first days before you join the main trail higher up the mountain.

Day by day

The 8-day Lemosho itinerary

Our recommended itinerary. Elevations and distances are approximate and can shift slightly with conditions and pace.

1

Londorossi Gate → Mti Mkubwa (Forest Camp)

2,100 → 2,650 m~6 km3–4 hrsRainforest

Drive to Londorossi Gate on the remote western side, then trek through dense montane rainforest alive with birdsong and colobus monkeys to your first camp, Mti Mkubwa — the “Big Tree” camp.

2

Mti Mkubwa → Shira 1 Camp

2,650 → 3,505 m~8 km5–6 hrsMoorland

Climb out of the forest and onto the moorland, reaching the rim of the Shira Plateau with your first sweeping views of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s main summit cone.

3

Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp

3,505 → 3,900 m~7 km3–4 hrsShira Plateau

A gentler day crossing the high Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth. An optional afternoon walk helps your body continue acclimatizing.

4

Shira 2 → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

3,900 → 4,600 → 3,960 m~10 km6–7 hrsAlpine desert

The key acclimatization day. Climb high to the Lava Tower at 4,600 m for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp. Sleeping lower than you climbed is exactly what prepares you for the summit.

5

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

3,960 → 3,995 m~5 km4–5 hrsAlpine desert

Tackle the famous Barranco Wall — a fun, hands-on scramble with no technical climbing — then traverse a series of ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp.

6

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

3,995 → 4,673 m~4 km4–5 hrsAlpine desert

A shorter climb to Barafu, your summit base camp. Arrive early to rest, eat, and prepare — you’ll set out for the top around midnight.

7

Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp (Summit Day)

4,673 → 5,895 → 3,068 m~17 km total12–14 hrsArctic summit

The big day. Set off in darkness and climb to Stella Point on the crater rim for sunrise, then walk along the rim to Uhuru Peak — at 5,895 m, the highest point in Africa. After your summit photos, descend to Barafu and continue down to Mweka Camp to rest.

8

Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate

3,068 → 1,640 m~10 km3–4 hrsRainforest

A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and say goodbye to the mountain crew who got you there.

Difficulty

How hard is the Lemosho Route?

Lemosho is graded moderate. There’s no technical climbing and no ropes or specialist skills are needed — if you can walk for several hours a day over consecutive days, you have the fitness for it.

The real challenge is altitude, not terrain. That’s precisely why the longer 8-day version suits most climbers best: the extra day gives your body more time to adjust and significantly improves your chances of reaching the summit.

Best time to climb

When to walk the Lemosho Route

The clearest, driest conditions fall in two main windows: January to early March and June to October. These are the most popular and reliable months for the summit.

The long rains (late March to May) and short rains (November) bring wetter trails and cloudier views, though Lemosho’s western approach can still be climbed year-round with the right preparation.
