African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Rongai Route
Kilimanjaro’s quietest path to the summit, approached from the dry northern side, with two full acclimatization days built in for a stronger, safer climb.
Overview
The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border — the only route to do so. It's Kilimanjaro's driest path up the mountain, which makes it the strongest choice if you're climbing in the shoulder or rainy season, and it sees noticeably fewer climbers than Machame or Lemosho, so camps stay quieter throughout.
We run it over eight days rather than the standard six, adding two dedicated acclimatization nights — one at Kikelewa Cave, one at Mawenzi Tarn beneath Mawenzi Peak. That's more built-in acclimatization time than most Rongai itineraries on the market, which is what meaningfully improves your summit odds at this altitude.
You'll also descend via the Marangu side of the mountain rather than retracing your ascent, so the second half of the trip shows you entirely different terrain from the first.

Trip highlights
Day by day
A transfer from Moshi to the remote Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border, then a gentle first climb through pine forest and open moorland to Simba Camp, your first night on the mountain.
A longer day across open moorland with Mawenzi Peak growing closer on the skyline. Kikelewa Cave is a small, sheltered camp tucked among giant heather.
Your first dedicated acclimatization day: a short "climb high, sleep low" hike toward the Kikelewa Caverns viewpoint before returning to sleep at camp, giving your body extra time to adjust.
A short but steady climb onto open alpine desert, camping at Mawenzi Tarn directly beneath Mawenzi's dramatic rock spires — one of the most striking campsites on the mountain.
Your second acclimatization day: a light walk around the tarn with rest built into the afternoon, before the push onto the Saddle tomorrow.
You cross the Saddle, a vast high-altitude plain between Mawenzi and Kibo, arriving at Kibo Hut in the early afternoon for an early dinner and rest before the summit attempt.
A midnight start for the summit push via Gilman's Point to Uhuru Peak for sunrise — the Roof of Africa. You then descend the full way down to Horombo, on the Marangu side of the mountain, for a well-earned rest.
A long final descent through moorland into rainforest, arriving at Marangu Gate for your summit certificate before transferring back to your hotel in Moshi.

Questions
No. Rongai is a non-technical trek — there’s no rope work or climbing skill required. The main challenge is the altitude, which this 8-day itinerary is specifically designed to manage.
Rongai is the driest route on the mountain and sees far fewer climbers, so it suits both rainy-season trips and anyone who wants a quieter, more remote experience. The trade-off is slightly less scenic variety on the ascent, which this itinerary offsets by descending via a different route.
The 8-day adds two dedicated acclimatization nights — at Kikelewa Cave and Mawenzi Tarn — instead of the usual one or none. More time to acclimatize is the single biggest lever for summit success at this altitude.
Summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We’ll give you a full packing list, and warm gear is available to rent if you need it.
Yes. Many climbers pair the climb with a Serengeti safari or a Zanzibar beach stay, all arranged by our team as one seamless trip.
