High-altitude plateau on Mount Kilimanjaro glowing under moonlight

Machame Route Full Moon Summit Climb

Time your summit night to a full moon and climb the Roof of Africa under a sky bright enough to light the trail — the same iconic Machame Route, on the mountain’s most magical nights.

7 days / 6 nights Summit 5,895m Full moon dates only from US$2,050 / person

Overview

The same great route, timed to the brightest nights of the month

The Full Moon Summit Climb follows the exact same 7-day Machame itinerary — five climate zones, the Shira Plateau, the Barranco Wall, and the same acclimatization-first pacing that gets climbers to the top. What changes is the timing: we schedule your summit night to fall on or near a full moon.

Under a full moon, the scree slopes above Barafu Camp are lit almost like daylight. Many climbers find it calming — you can see the ridgeline, the glaciers, and the shape of the mountain around you, rather than just the small circle of your headlamp. It’s the same climb, made quietly unforgettable.

Every climb is led by our senior local guides, supported by a well-cared-for crew, and carries emergency oxygen and daily health checks — so you can focus on the mountain, not the logistics.

Day by day

Your 7-day Full Moon Machame itinerary

1Day

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

~11 km5–7 hrs1,640m → 2,835mRainforest

After your morning briefing and transfer to Machame Gate, you begin climbing through dense, lush rainforest alive with birdsong. A steady first day brings you to Machame Camp for your first night under canvas.

2Day

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

~5 km4–6 hrs2,835m → 3,750mMoorland

The forest gives way to open moorland and giant heather. A shorter but steeper day, with the summit coming into view as you cross onto the Shira Plateau — a striking sight as the moon rises that evening.

3Day

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp, via Lava Tower

~10 km6–8 hrsup to 4,630mSemi-desert

A key acclimatization day: you climb high to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. “Climb high, sleep low” helps your body adjust and sets you up for the summit.

4Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

~5 km4–5 hrs3,960m → 3,995mAlpine desert

The day starts with the iconic Barranco Wall — a fun, non-technical scramble that rewards you with sweeping views. A short day to Karanga Camp, this extra night is the acclimatization advantage of the 7-day route.

5Day

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

~4 km4–5 hrs3,995m → 4,673mAlpine desert

A steady climb to Barafu, the summit base camp. You arrive early, eat well, and rest through the afternoon and evening — because tonight, under a nearly full moon, you climb.

6Day

Summit day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, then to Mweka Camp

~17 km12–16 hrs4,673m → 5,895m → 3,068mArctic → forest

You set off around midnight for the long climb to Stella Point and on to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — with the full moon lighting the scree slopes and glaciers around you. After your summit photos, you descend all the way to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.

7Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, and transfer to your hotel

~10 km3–4 hrs3,068m → 1,640mRainforest

A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. We then transfer you back to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration.

Questions

Frequently asked

How is this different from the standard 7-day Machame climb?

The route, itinerary, and safety standards are identical. The only difference is timing — we schedule your departure so summit night falls on or near a full moon, when the mountain is lit almost like daylight.

Do I still need a headlamp?

Yes. Cloud cover can obscure the moon at any point, and park rules require a headlamp on summit night regardless. Think of the moonlight as a beautiful bonus, not a replacement.

How far in advance should I book?

Full moon departure dates are limited and fill up quickly, especially in peak season. We’d recommend booking several months ahead to secure your date.

Is the price per person?

Yes. The exact figure depends on your group size and dates — get in touch and we’ll send an honest, all-inclusive quote.

Can I add a safari or Zanzibar afterwards?

Absolutely. Many climbers pair the climb with a Serengeti safari or a Zanzibar beach stay, all arranged by our team as one seamless trip.
