Small-Group Machame Route Climb

Climb Kilimanjaro’s most popular route on a scheduled small-group departure — shared cost, shared summit, and the camaraderie of a capped, like-minded group.

7 days / 6 nights Small group (max 8–12) Summit 5,895m from US$1,790 / person

Overview

Climb the Whiskey Route with a friendly, capped-size group

Our small-group Machame departures are the ideal way to take on Kilimanjaro if you’re travelling solo or as a pair and want both great value and good company. You climb the same scenic seven-day Machame Route, on fixed departure dates, alongside a small group of fellow trekkers.

Because the cost of guides, cooks, porters, and equipment is shared across the group, a small-group climb is more affordable than going private — without cutting a single corner on safety or the acclimatization that gets you to the top.

We deliberately cap our group sizes. You still get the personal attention, careful pacing, and daily health checks of a smaller expedition, plus the shared encouragement that makes summit night that little bit easier.

Day by day

Your 7-day Machame itinerary

1Day

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

~11 km5–7 hrs1,640m → 2,835mRainforest

After meeting your group and guides for the morning briefing, you transfer to Machame Gate and begin climbing through dense, lush rainforest. A steady first day brings you to Machame Camp for your first night under canvas.

2Day

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

~5 km4–6 hrs2,835m → 3,750mMoorland

The forest gives way to open moorland and giant heather. A shorter but steeper day, with the summit coming into view as you cross onto the Shira Plateau.

3Day

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp, via Lava Tower

~10 km6–8 hrsup to 4,630mSemi-desert

A key acclimatization day: you climb high to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. “Climb high, sleep low” helps your body adjust and sets the group up for the summit.

4Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

~5 km4–5 hrs3,960m → 3,995mAlpine desert

The day starts with the iconic Barranco Wall — a fun, non-technical scramble that rewards you with sweeping views. A short day to Karanga Camp, this extra night is the acclimatization advantage of the 7-day route.

5Day

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

~4 km4–5 hrs3,995m → 4,673mAlpine desert

A steady climb to Barafu, the summit base camp. You arrive early, eat well, and rest through the afternoon and evening — because tonight, the group climbs.

6Day

Summit day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, then to Mweka Camp

~17 km12–16 hrs4,673m → 5,895m → 3,068mArctic → forest

You set off around midnight for the long climb to Stella Point and on to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — for sunrise. After celebrating together and taking your summit photos, you descend to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.

7Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, and transfer to your hotel

~10 km3–4 hrs3,068m → 1,640mRainforest

A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where the group receives their summit certificates. We then transfer you back to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration.

Questions

Frequently asked

How big is the group?

We cap our small-group departures so you keep the personal attention of a smaller expedition — typically a maximum of 8 to 12 climbers, plus your full guide and support crew.

Will I be climbing with strangers?

You’ll join a small group of fellow travellers, often solo climbers and couples from around the world. Most people find the shared challenge creates fast friendships and makes summit night far more enjoyable.

Is a small-group climb cheaper than a private one?

Yes. Because the cost of guides, porters, cooks, and equipment is shared across the group, a small-group departure is more affordable than a private climb — with no compromise on safety or acclimatization.

Do I need climbing experience?

No. Machame is a non-technical trek — no rope work or climbing skill required. The main challenge is the altitude, which our 7-day itinerary is designed to manage.

Can I add a safari or Zanzibar afterwards?

Absolutely. Many climbers pair the climb with a Serengeti safari or a Zanzibar beach stay, all arranged by our team as one seamless trip.
