Family Machame Route Climb

The iconic Machame Route, paced for families — extra time to rest, encourage each other, and reach the summit together as a team.

8 days / 7 nights Summit 5,895m Family-paced from US$2,150 / person

Overview

The Machame Route, at a pace built for families

The Machame Route — the “Whiskey Route” — is Kilimanjaro’s most scenic climb, winding through five climate zones from lush rainforest to arctic summit. It’s a fantastic route for families climbing together, but the standard itinerary can move quickly for younger or less experienced climbers.

So we stretch it to eight days rather than seven, adding a second extra acclimatization night. Shorter walking days, a gentler pace, and more time to rest at camp make the climb far more comfortable for children and parents climbing side by side — without changing the safety standards or the route itself.

Your dedicated family guide keeps spirits high and checks in constantly, while a full crew handles the logistics so you can focus on the experience of climbing together.

Day by day

Your 8-day family Machame itinerary

1Day

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

~11 km6–8 hrs1,640m → 2,835mRainforest

A relaxed start through lush rainforest, with plenty of stops to spot colobus monkeys and birdlife. We take this first day slowly so everyone settles into the rhythm of the climb together.

2Day

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

~5 km4–6 hrs2,835m → 3,750mMoorland

The forest opens into moorland, with the summit coming into view across the Shira Plateau. A shorter day, giving the family plenty of time to rest at camp.

3Day

Acclimatization day at Shira Camp

~3 km2–3 hrsday hike to 4,000mAlpine desert

A gentle day hike higher up the plateau, then back to sleep at Shira Camp. This extra family-specific acclimatization day is what makes the climb noticeably more comfortable for younger climbers.

4Day

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp, via Lava Tower

~10 km6–8 hrsup to 4,630mSemi-desert

Climb high to Lava Tower for lunch, then descend to sleep lower at Barranco. “Climb high, sleep low” helps everyone’s bodies adjust, with plenty of family rest stops along the way.

5Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

~5 km4–5 hrs3,960m → 3,995mAlpine desert

A fun, non-technical scramble up the famous Barranco Wall — a highlight the kids won’t stop talking about — followed by a short walk to Karanga Camp.

6Day

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

~4 km4–5 hrs3,995m → 4,673mAlpine desert

A steady climb to Barafu, the summit base camp. The family rests together through the afternoon, eats well, and prepares for the summit push ahead.

7Day

Summit day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, then to Mweka Camp

~17 km12–17 hrs4,673m → 5,895m → 3,068mArctic → forest

The whole family sets off together for Stella Point and Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — for sunrise. A slower, steady pace with extra breaks, then a full descent to Mweka Camp to rest.

8Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, and transfer to your hotel

~10 km3–4 hrs3,068m → 1,640mRainforest

A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where the whole family receives their summit certificates together. We then transfer you back to your hotel to celebrate.

Questions

Frequently asked

What’s the minimum age for this climb?

We generally recommend Machame for children aged 12 and up who can walk long days comfortably. Every child is different, so please get in touch to discuss your family’s ages and fitness before booking.

Why 8 days instead of the standard 7?

The extra day adds a second acclimatization stop, giving younger climbers more time to adjust to the altitude and keeping the daily walking hours shorter and more manageable.

Will we climb as a private group?

Yes. Family climbs are private — it’s your family and your guide team only, with no strangers to keep pace with.

What if one family member needs to turn back?

Your guide team is trained to split safely if needed, with an assistant guide escorting anyone who needs to descend while the rest of the group continues, so one person’s pace never has to end the trip for everyone.

Is the price per person?

Yes. The exact figure depends on your family’s size and dates — get in touch and we’ll send an honest, all-inclusive quote.
