9-Day Northern Circuit Climb

The longest route on the mountain and the one with the highest published summit success rate — a full loop around Kilimanjaro’s quiet northern slopes.

9 days / 8 nights Summit 5,895m Moderate from US$2,990 / person

Overview

Kilimanjaro’s longest route, built for the strongest odds

The Northern Circuit is the newest and longest way up Kilimanjaro — and the one with the highest published summit success rate of any route on the mountain. It begins on the same trail as Lemosho, then breaks east to loop around the remote northern slopes near the Kenyan border, a side of Kilimanjaro almost no other route touches.

Nine days on the mountain means more time at altitude before you ever approach the summit, including a dedicated acclimatization day at Moir Hut. That extra margin is what drives the success rate: your body gets the time it needs, rather than being rushed toward 5,895m.

Because it swings wide around the north side, you’ll also see far fewer climbers than on Machame or Lemosho — long stretches of trail with just your group, your crew, and the mountain. Every climb carries emergency oxygen, twice-daily health checks, and senior local guides as standard.

  • All five climate zones — rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit — on the longest possible traverse.
  • Sunrise on Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m.

Day by day

Your 9-day Northern Circuit itinerary

1Day

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)

~6 km3–4 hrs2,250m → 2,835mRainforest

After registration at Londorossi Gate and a short drive to the trailhead, you enter dense montane rainforest. A gentle first day brings you to Mti Mkubwa for your first night on the mountain.

2Day

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

~8 km5–6 hrs2,835m → 3,505mMoorland

The forest thins into heather and open moorland as you climb onto the edge of the Shira Plateau, with your first real views of Kibo’s summit dome.

3Day

Shira 1 to Moir Hut

~13 km5–6 hrs3,505m → 4,200mSemi-desert / moorland

A long, gradual crossing of the Shira Plateau before branching north off the standard Lemosho line toward Moir Hut, a quiet camp beneath the Lent Hills.

4Day

Acclimatization day at Moir Hut

~6 km round trip3–4 hrsup to ~4,375mAlpine desert

This is the day that sets the Northern Circuit apart. An optional acclimatization hike up the Lent Hills gains altitude for a few hours before you return to sleep at Moir Hut — “climb high, sleep low” in practice, and the extra night that lifts this route from 8 to 9 days.

5Day

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

~14 km6–7 hrs4,200m → 4,020mAlpine desert

The longest walking day of the trek, tracing the remote northern traverse with sweeping views across the Kenyan plains — and rarely another climber in sight.

6Day

Buffalo Camp to Rongai Third Cave Camp

~9 km4–5 hrs4,020m → 3,800mAlpine desert

The circuit continues east, joining the upper reaches of the Rongai line. A shorter day that lets your body settle before the final push toward summit camp.

7Day

Rongai Third Cave to School Hut

~6 km4 hrs3,800m → 4,800mAlpine desert

A short, steady climb to School Hut, your final camp before the summit attempt. An early dinner and early lights-out — summit night starts around midnight.

8Day

Summit day: School Hut to Uhuru Peak, then to Mweka Camp

~15 km12–14 hrs4,800m → 5,895m → 3,100mArctic → forest

You set off in darkness for the summit push, reaching Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — around sunrise. After summit photos, a long descent brings you down through changing terrain to Mweka Camp for the night.

9Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, and transfer to your hotel

~10 km3–4 hrs3,100m → 1,640mRainforest

A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. We then transfer you back to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration.

Good to know

Before you book this climb

Fitness

No technical skills needed. The extra days actually make this a gentler pace day-to-day than shorter routes — good general fitness is all that’s required.

Best time

The dry seasons — January to March and June to October — offer the clearest, most reliable conditions on the northern slopes.

Why the success rate is higher

More days at altitude means more time for your body to adapt before the summit push — the single biggest factor in whether climbers reach Uhuru Peak.

Gear

Bring your own kit or rent quality equipment from us — from sleeping bags to summit-night down jackets.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why choose the Northern Circuit over Machame or Lemosho?

It’s the longest route on the mountain, and that extra time at altitude is why it carries the highest published summit success rate of any Kilimanjaro route. You’ll also see far fewer other climbers, since it swings around the quiet northern slopes rather than the busier southern approaches.

Is 9 days harder than a shorter route?

Not in terms of daily exertion — if anything it’s gentler day-to-day, since the extra time is spread across more, shorter walking days. What it asks for is more time off, not more fitness.

How cold does it get on summit night?

Summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We’ll give you a full packing list, and warm gear is available to rent if you need it.

Is the price per person?

Yes. The exact figure depends on your group size and dates — send us an enquiry and we’ll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote.

Can I add a safari or Zanzibar afterwards?

Absolutely. Many climbers pair the climb with a Serengeti safari or a Zanzibar beach stay, all arranged by our team as one seamless trip.
