Route overview

Why Machame earned the name “Whiskey Route”

If Marangu is the gentle “Coca-Cola Route,” Machame is its bolder cousin — steeper, wilder, and more rewarding, hence the stronger drink it’s named after. It’s the route around half of all Kilimanjaro climbers choose, and for good reason.

Approaching from the south, Machame carries you through five distinct climate zones in a matter of days: from steaming rainforest, up across open moorland and the vast Shira Plateau, into stark alpine desert, and finally onto the glacier-fringed arctic summit.

Crucially, its natural “climb high, sleep low” profile — especially the ascent to Lava Tower — gives your body time to adjust, which is why the 7-day version has one of the strongest summit success rates on the mountain.

Is Machame right for you?

An honest look before you commit

Why climbers love it

  • Excellent “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization, so higher summit success on the 7-day version.
  • Arguably the most scenic route — five climate zones, Shira Plateau and the famous Barranco Wall.
  • The most popular route, so it’s well-established and superbly supported.
  • No technical climbing — a demanding trek, not a mountaineering expedition.

Things to weigh up

  • Steeper and more physically demanding than the Marangu Route.
  • Camping only — there are no huts on this route.
  • Busier than remote routes like Rongai or the Northern Circuit.
  • The 6-day version cuts an acclimatization day — we recommend 7 for the best odds.

Day by day

The 7-day Machame itinerary

A typical day-by-day breakdown. Distances, times and altitudes are approximate and can vary slightly with conditions and pace.

1Day

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

1,640m → 2,835m~11 km5–7 hrsRainforest

Register at Machame Gate, then begin a steady climb through lush montane rainforest alive with birdsong and, if you’re lucky, colobus monkeys. The forest gives way as you reach Machame Camp for your first night on the mountain.

2Day

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

2,835m → 3,750m~5 km4–6 hrsMoorland

A steeper morning climb lifts you out of the forest into open heath and moorland, with your first sweeping views of Kibo’s glaciers. A shorter day by design, to help your body acclimatize.

3Day

Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

3,750m → 4,630m → 3,960m~10 km6–8 hrsAlpine desert

The classic “climb high, sleep low” day. You ascend to Lava Tower at 4,630m for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp. The altitude gained and lost is exactly what trains your body for summit night — fewer headaches, better odds.

4Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

3,960m → 3,995m~5 km4–5 hrsBarranco Wall

Start with the famous Barranco Wall — a fun, non-technical scramble that looks intimidating but is a highlight for most climbers. Beyond it, you cross a series of ridges and valleys to reach Karanga Camp.

5Day

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

3,995m → 4,673m~4 km4–5 hrsAlpine desert

A steady climb across an increasingly stark, lunar landscape to Barafu Camp, your summit base. You arrive early, eat well, and rest — because tonight, around midnight, you climb.

6Day

Summit Day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, then Mweka Camp

4,673m → 5,895m → 3,100m~17 km12–15 hrsArctic summit

The big one. You set off in the dark to reach Stella Point at dawn, then make the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa — for sunrise over the glaciers. After your summit moment, you descend all the way to Mweka Camp to rest.

7Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

3,100m → 1,640m~10 km3–4 hrsRainforest

A final descent through the rainforest brings you back to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. From here, you transfer back to your hotel for a hot shower and a well-earned celebration.

Difficulty & fitness

Demanding, but no technical skills needed

Machame is a challenging trek, not a climb requiring ropes or equipment. If you’re in good general health and can comfortably walk for several hours across consecutive days, you’re capable of it.

The real challenge is altitude, not technical difficulty. Summit night is long and cold, and the thin air makes the final hours the hardest of the whole trek. This is exactly why we favour the 7-day itinerary and its extra acclimatization — the slower you go high, the more likely you are to make it.

A few months of regular cardio and some hikes with a loaded pack will prepare most people well.

When to climb

Best time to climb the Machame Route

Best months

The two dry seasons offer the clearest skies and most reliable conditions: January to early March and June to October. These are the most popular — and most rewarding — times to climb.

Best avoided

The long rains of April and May, and the shorter rains around November, make trails wetter and views less certain. Climbs still run, but conditions are tougher.
