Kilimanjaro Routes
Kilimanjaro’s only northern approach — the driest route on the mountain, the quietest trails, and the best option in the shoulder and rainy seasons. Choose from twelve ways to climb it below.
About the route
Rongai is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. That single fact shapes everything about it: it’s the driest route on the mountain, it sees far fewer climbers than Machame or Lemosho, and it’s the strongest choice for anyone climbing in the shoulder or rainy season when the southern routes are wetter.
You’ll camp beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi Peak, cross the vast alpine plain of the Saddle, and descend via the Marangu side of the mountain — so the descent shows you entirely different terrain from the climb up. It’s a camping route throughout, with quality tents and a full support crew at every stop.
Below are all twelve ways we run the Rongai Route, from a standard 6-day climb to full VIP service, plus longer itineraries with extra acclimatization time for a stronger summit.
