African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Rongai Route
A private climb for two on Kilimanjaro’s quietest route — the drier northern side, away from the crowded southern trails, with just your partner, your guide, and your dedicated crew.
Overview
The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. It’s the driest of the standard routes, the quietest in terms of trail traffic, and the best choice if you’re climbing outside the main dry-season windows — all of which makes it a naturally good fit for a couple who want the mountain without the crowds.
We run this as a private departure: your own guide, your own crew, and a pace set by the two of you rather than a fixed group schedule. The route descends via the Marangu side, so your final days bring long views over the plains before a gentler walk-out.
Every climb carries emergency oxygen, twice-daily health checks, and senior local guides — the same safety standard across every package we run, private or not.

Trip highlights
Day by day
A transfer from your hotel brings you to the Rongai (Nalemuru) Gate on Kilimanjaro’s northern side. The trail climbs gently through pine forest and into open moorland, a quiet start with the trail mostly to yourselves.
A longer day across rolling moorland, with Mawenzi’s jagged spires drawing closer with every hour. Camp sits in a sheltered valley with wide views back over the plains.
A short but steep climb onto the alpine desert, camping directly beneath Mawenzi Peak at the Tarn — one of the most dramatic camps on the mountain, and a good acclimatization stop before the Saddle.
You cross the vast, barren Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo — Africa’s largest high-altitude desert. An early arrival at Kibo Hut gives you the afternoon to rest before summit night.
A midnight start for the push to Gilman’s Point and on to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After summit photos together, you descend the long way down to Horombo Hut on the Marangu side.
A long, steady descent through moorland and back into rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you both receive your summit certificates. We transfer you back to your hotel for a shower, a meal, and a toast to the climb.
The details
Good to know
No technical skills needed for either of you, but general fitness helps. A few months of hiking or cardio beforehand makes summit night easier.
Fewer climbers on the trail than Machame or Lemosho, plus the driest conditions on the mountain — a quieter, more private experience.
Twice-daily health checks and emergency oxygen are standard on every climb we run, private departures included.
Bring your own kit or rent quality equipment from us for both of you — from sleeping bags to summit-night down jackets.
Secure your dates and let us handle the rest.
