Rongai Route Full Moon Summit Climb

Kilimanjaro’s quietest, driest route, timed to a full-moon summit night — clear northern skies, a lit trail underfoot, and sunrise over the plains of Kenya.

7 days / 6 nights Summit 5,895m Moderate from US$2,390 / person

Overview

The driest route, timed to the brightest night

Rongai is Kilimanjaro’s least-crowded approach, climbing the mountain’s northern flank near the Kenyan border. It’s the driest of all the routes — the rain shadow means clearer skies more often than anywhere else on the mountain, which is exactly what you want on the one night that matters.

We time this departure to a full moon. On a clear night the trail up to Uhuru Peak is lit well enough that headlamps become a backup rather than a necessity, the exposed scree of the summit push is easier to read underfoot, and the views back over the Kenyan plains at 2am are unlike anything the busier southern routes offer.

The seven-day itinerary adds an acclimatization night at Mawenzi Tarn before the push to Kibo Hut — extra margin that matters more, not less, on a fixed-date departure you can’t simply reschedule if your body needs another day. Every climb runs with senior local guides, a well-cared-for crew, emergency oxygen, and daily health checks.

Climbers crossing high alpine-desert terrain on Kilimanjaro's northern side

Trip highlights

What you’ll experience

  • Kilimanjaro’s quietest route — far fewer climbers than Machame or Lemosho, most days on trail alone with your group.
  • A full-moon summit push, with the trail lit well enough to see your footing and the surrounding peaks by moonlight.
  • Mawenzi Peak up close — Kilimanjaro’s jagged second summit, seen from directly beneath at Mawenzi Tarn.
  • The driest route on the mountain, with the rain shadow giving you the best odds of a clear summit night.
  • A built-in acclimatization night at Mawenzi Tarn for a safer, better-paced climb to fixed dates.

Day by day

Your 7-day Rongai Full Moon itinerary

1Day

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

~7 km4–5 hrs1,950m → 2,625mForest → moorland

After your transfer to the Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border, you climb gently through pine forest and open moorland — a quiet, gradual start on the mountain’s least-travelled side.

2Day

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Cave

~11 km5–6 hrs2,625m → 3,600mMoorland

Open, rolling moorland with wide views back over the plains. The trail steepens toward the end as you close in on Kikelewa, with the jagged outline of Mawenzi Peak ahead.

3Day

Kikelewa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn

~4 km3–4 hrs3,600m → 4,330mAlpine desert

A short but steep climb onto the alpine desert plateau beneath Mawenzi. You camp at the tarn directly under the peak — one of the most dramatic camp settings on the mountain.

4Day

Acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn

~3 km round trip2–3 hrs4,330mAlpine desert

A short acclimatization walk toward the Mawenzi ridge and back, then rest at camp. This extra day is the difference-maker for a fixed-date summit — it gives your body time to adjust before the push across the Saddle.

5Day

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut, via the Saddle

~10 km4–5 hrs4,330m → 4,700mLunar desert

You cross the wide, barren Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo — stark, otherworldly terrain. Arrive at Kibo Hut early to rest, eat, and prepare gear before tonight’s summit push.

6Day

Full moon summit: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then to Horombo Hut

~21 km13–16 hrs4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720mArctic → moorland

You set off by moonlight for Gilman’s Point and on to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa, for sunrise over the plains. A clear full-moon night on the driest route gives you the best odds on the mountain of an unobstructed climb. After summit photos, you descend all the way to Horombo Hut.

7Day

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, and transfer to your hotel

~20 km5–6 hrs3,720m → 1,860mMoorland → rainforest

A long final descent through moorland into rainforest, exiting via Marangu Gate for your summit certificate. We then transfer you back to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why climb Rongai for a full-moon summit?

Rongai is the driest route on the mountain, which means better odds of a clear night. Combined with a full moon, that gives you the best realistic chance of an unobstructed summit push anywhere on Kilimanjaro.

Do the dates move with the moon each time?

Yes. Departures are fixed to full-moon nights, which shift each month. ⚠ We’ll confirm the exact upcoming dates with you before booking — this is not yet finalized on our end.

Is Rongai easier than Machame or Lemosho?

It’s a gentler, more gradual gradient on the way up, but the descent via Marangu is long and the Saddle crossing is exposed. Altitude is still the main challenge, which is why we’ve built in the Mawenzi Tarn acclimatization day.

Do I need climbing experience?

No. Rongai is a non-technical trek — there’s no rope work or climbing skill required.

Is the price per person?

Yes. The exact figure depends on your group size and dates — send us an enquiry and we’ll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote.
