Kilimanjaro · Women’s Group · Shira Route
A dedicated women’s group ascent across Kilimanjaro’s dramatic Shira Plateau, with careful acclimatization, supportive trekking and a sunrise summit at Uhuru Peak.
Overview
The Shira Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west and begins high on the Shira Plateau. For a women’s group, it offers a memorable combination of wide volcanic landscapes, shared challenges and a strong sense of achievement as the route progresses toward Uhuru Peak.
The 7-day itinerary crosses the Shira Plateau, continues through the Southern Circuit and uses Lava Tower as a key acclimatization point before descending to Barranco. From there, the group tackles the Barranco Wall and continues through Karanga and Barafu for the summit attempt.
This is a non-technical trek, but the high starting elevation makes acclimatization especially important. A slow pace, good hydration, rest and close attention to altitude symptoms are essential throughout the climb.

Trip highlights
Day by day
After registration at Londorossi Gate, a 4WD transfer takes the group high onto the western side of Kilimanjaro. The trek begins near the Shira Plateau with a short walk across open moorland to Simba Camp. The gentle opening stage allows everyone to settle into the high starting altitude.
The group crosses the broad Shira Plateau through open volcanic grassland and moorland. The walking remains relatively gentle, giving the body another valuable day to adjust while the group enjoys wide views toward Kibo.
This is the key acclimatization day. The group climbs gradually to Lava Tower at around 4,630m, spends time at altitude and then descends to Barranco Camp. The climb-high, sleep-low pattern provides an important opportunity for altitude adaptation.
The morning begins with the famous Barranco Wall. It is steep and hands-on in places, but it is a non-technical scramble. Beyond the wall, the route crosses ridges and valleys toward Karanga with spectacular views across Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes.
A short but steadily rising trek brings the group to Barafu Camp, the high camp for the summit attempt. After reaching camp, the priority is eating, hydrating, checking summit gear and resting before the overnight ascent.
The summit attempt starts around midnight. The group climbs slowly toward Stella Point, continues along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak for sunrise, celebrates the achievement together and then descends through Barafu to Mweka Camp.
The final descent passes through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. After park formalities and the summit certificate presentation, the group transfers to Moshi for a hot shower, rest and a well-earned celebration.
The details
Good to know
No technical climbing skills are required, but you should be comfortable with long uphill walking and several consecutive days on the trail.
January to March and June to October generally offer the most favorable trekking conditions, with drier weather and better visibility.
The route starts high, so the group should maintain a slow pace, stay hydrated and follow guide instructions if altitude symptoms develop.
Bring a proper layered trekking system, warm summit clothing, waterproof protection and a suitable sleeping bag. Essential gear can be arranged for rental where available.
Share the challenge, the sunrise and the summit with a dedicated women’s group.
