Kilimanjaro · VIP Shira Route

VIP Shira Route Climb

A private, premium 7-day ascent from the western side of Kilimanjaro, combining exclusive mountain support, upgraded camp comfort, careful acclimatization and a sunrise summit of Uhuru Peak.

7 days / 6 nights Summit 5,895m Challenging from US$5,300 / person

Overview

A high-altitude western approach with big mountain scenery

The Shira Route is Kilimanjaro’s original western approach, beginning high on the Shira Plateau rather than climbing gradually through the rainforest. After registration at Londorossi Gate, you continue by vehicle toward the Shira Plateau before starting the trek around 3,500–3,600m.

The route crosses open moorland and the Shira Plateau before joining the Southern Circuit. From there, you climb to Lava Tower for a crucial acclimatization gain, descend to Barranco, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, and continue through Karanga and Barafu toward Uhuru Peak.

This is a non-technical climb, but the high starting elevation makes acclimatization especially important. The itinerary combines gradual trekking days with the “climb high, sleep low” principle before the final summit push.

Day by day

Your 7-day Shira Route itinerary

1Day

Londorossi Gate to Shira 1 Camp

~4 km2 hrs3,500m → 3,505mMoorland

Your private VIP transfer takes you from Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration and park formalities before continuing by vehicle to the Shira trailhead. The trek begins across open heath and moorland toward Shira 1 Camp. Because the route starts high, the first day is intentionally short and controlled while your guide monitors how you respond to the altitude.

2Day

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

~6 km4–5 hrs3,505m → 3,847mMoorland

Continue across the spectacular Shira Plateau, passing volcanic formations and wide-open views toward Kibo. The trail climbs gradually toward Shira 2 Camp, giving you valuable time at altitude without rushing. Your VIP camp team prepares a full meal service and a comfortable evening setup for rest and recovery.

3Day

Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

~11 km6–8 hrs3,847m → 4,630m → 3,976mAlpine desert

This is the major acclimatization day. You climb steadily to Lava Tower at 4,630m, where you take lunch and complete a health check before descending toward Barranco. Sleeping lower after reaching a higher altitude follows the climb-high, sleep-low principle and gives your body a valuable acclimatization stimulus.

4Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

~5 km4–5 hrs3,976m → 3,995mAlpine desert

After breakfast, your guide leads you up the famous Barranco Wall. It is a hands-on trekking section rather than technical climbing, with the guide choosing the safest route for your group. Continue across ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp, then use the afternoon to hydrate, recover and prepare for the final high camps.

5Day

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

~4 km4–5 hrs3,995m → 4,673mAlpine desert

A steady ascent takes you to Barafu, the exposed summit base camp. Your VIP team prepares your camp, an early meal and hot drinks while the guides assess your condition. After an early rest period, you receive the summit briefing and prepare for the midnight departure.

6Day

Summit day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, then to Mweka Camp

~17 km12–16 hrs4,673m → 5,895m → 3,068mArctic → forest

Depart around midnight for the slow, deliberate climb toward Stella Point. Continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m and arrive around sunrise when conditions allow. After celebrating at the Roof of Africa, descend through the alpine zone and continue to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.

7Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, then private transfer to your hotel

~10 km3–4 hrs3,068m → 1,640mRainforest

Make the final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. After completing the park exit formalities and receiving your summit certificate, your private vehicle takes you back to your hotel for a hot shower, a proper meal and time to recover after the climb.

Questions

Frequently asked

What makes the VIP Shira Route different from a standard climb?

The route itself remains the challenging Shira approach to Uhuru Peak, but the service is private and comfort-focused. Your group has a dedicated guide team, premium camp equipment, private bathroom facilities, dedicated dining space, upgraded sleeping arrangements and a more personalized pace throughout the climb.

Is the Shira Route suitable for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers?

It can be, but the high starting elevation makes the Shira Route less forgiving than routes that begin lower. Your guide will control the pace and monitor your condition closely. Anyone new to high-altitude trekking should prepare properly and discuss their experience honestly before departure.

What type of VIP accommodation is provided on the mountain?

The mountain setup uses spacious four-season sleeping tents with upgraded mattresses and bedding, a private portable toilet tent, washstand and hot-water service, plus a dedicated dining tent with tables, chairs and lighting. The aim is to provide significantly more comfort without taking you away from the mountain environment.

What is included in the US$5,300 price?

The package includes Kilimanjaro park and rescue fees, a private guide team and support crew, premium meals and water, VIP camping equipment, private toilet and dining facilities, emergency oxygen and health monitoring, private transfers, two hotel nights in Moshi and a summit certificate. Flights, visa, travel insurance, crew tips and personal trekking equipment are excluded.

How is altitude managed on the 7-day Shira Route?

The itinerary includes a key climb-high, sleep-low day through Lava Tower before descending to Barranco. The private guide team uses a deliberately slow pace, regular rest and health checks, while oxygen and first-aid equipment are carried for emergencies. If a climber becomes unwell, safety takes priority over reaching the summit on schedule.

Can the VIP experience be customized for our private group?

Yes. Because the climb is private, the team can tailor pacing, meal preferences, rest periods, transfers and pre- or post-climb arrangements around your group. Any additional services or hotel upgrades can be quoted separately before confirmation.
