VIP Marangu Route Climb

The only hut-to-hut route on the mountain, elevated: a dedicated senior guide, first-choice hut bunks, and private transfers throughout.

6 days / 5 nights Summit 5,895m Moderate from US$4,800 / person

Overview

The Coca-Cola Route, climbed the VIP way

Marangu is the only route on Kilimanjaro where you sleep in mountain huts instead of tents — real beds, a roof, and shared dining rooms each night, on the same path both up and down. It's a gentler introduction to high-altitude trekking than the wilder routes, without being any less of a genuine Kilimanjaro summit.

Our VIP version adds a dedicated senior guide assigned exclusively to your climb, hut bunks reserved and secured ahead of your arrival, private 4x4 transfers in place of shared vehicles, and welcome and farewell dinners at a premium Moshi lodge. We run it over six days rather than the rushed five, adding an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut — the single change that most improves your summit odds on this route.

Every VIP climb carries emergency oxygen, twice-daily health checks, and a guide-to-climber ratio built around your comfort, not just your safety minimum.

Day by day

Your 6-day VIP Marangu itinerary

1Day

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

~8 km3–4 hrs1,860m → 2,700mRainforest

After a private transfer from your hotel and registration at Marangu Gate, a gentle, well-graded trail climbs through rainforest to Mandara Hut, your first night's private VIP accommodation.

2Day

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

~12 km5–6 hrs2,700m → 3,720mMoorland

The forest opens into moorland as you climb steadily to Horombo Hut, with Kibo's summit dome and Mawenzi's jagged peak both visible on a clear day.

3Day

Acclimatization day at Horombo Hut

~5 km3 hrsup to ~4,000mAlpine desert

A short acclimatization hike toward Zebra Rocks or the Mawenzi viewpoint, then back down to sleep at Horombo. This is the day the rushed 5-day itinerary skips — and the single biggest factor in your summit odds on this route.

4Day

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

~10 km5–6 hrs3,720m → 4,700mAlpine desert

The vegetation thins to a stark, moon-like alpine desert as you cross the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. An early dinner and rest at Kibo Hut — because tonight, you climb.

5Day

Summit day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then down to Horombo Hut

~21 km11–14 hrs4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720mArctic → moorland

A pre-midnight start for the steady climb to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — for sunrise. You descend the same path all the way back to Horombo Hut for the night.

6Day

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, and private transfer to your hotel

~20 km5–6 hrs3,720m → 1,860mMoorland → rainforest

A long final descent back through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. Your private vehicle takes you straight back to a hot shower and a farewell dinner.

Good to know

Before you book this climb

Fitness

No technical skills needed — Marangu's gradient is the gentlest on the mountain. General fitness and steady walking pace matter more than climbing experience.

Best time

The dry seasons — January to March and June to October — offer the clearest, most reliable conditions.

Safety & acclimatization

Twice-daily health checks, emergency oxygen, and the extra acclimatization day at Horombo are built in as standard on this itinerary.

Huts, not tents

Marangu is the only route with hut accommodation — bunk beds, mattresses, and a communal dining room each night. Bedding and a warm sleeping bag are still recommended.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is Marangu the easiest route to the summit?

It has the gentlest gradient and it's the only route with hut accommodation, which many climbers find more comfortable than camping. It is not automatically the easiest way to summit, though — our 6-day itinerary adds an acclimatization day specifically because the rushed 5-day version has a lower success rate.

What does the VIP upgrade actually change?

A senior guide assigned exclusively to your climb, hut bunks reserved ahead of your arrival, private 4x4 transfers instead of shared vehicles, and welcome and farewell dinners at a premium Moshi lodge — on top of everything in our standard Marangu itinerary.

Do I sleep in a tent or a hut on this route?

A hut, every night. Marangu is the only Kilimanjaro route with dormitory-style mountain huts rather than tents — you'll still want a warm sleeping bag, but there's no pitching camp.

How cold does it get on summit night?

Summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We'll give you a full packing list, and warm gear is available to rent if you need it.

Can I add a safari or Zanzibar afterwards?

Yes. Many climbers pair the climb with a Serengeti safari or a Zanzibar beach stay, arranged by our team as one seamless trip.
