Shira Route Crater Camp Climb

An advanced Kilimanjaro adventure across the Shira Plateau to an overnight stay inside Kibo’s crater, followed by an early ascent to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m.

8 days / 7 nights Summit 5,895m Challenging from US$3,499 / person

Overview

A rare high-altitude Kilimanjaro experience with a night inside the crater

The Shira Route Crater Camp Climb follows Kilimanjaro’s western approach across the high Shira Plateau before joining the Southern Circuit toward Baranco, Karanga and Barafu. The defining feature is an overnight stay at Crater Camp, approximately 5,730m above sea level inside Kibo’s crater.

From Barafu, the group makes a demanding ascent toward the crater rim, then descends into the crater for the night. The following morning begins with a short but slow climb from Crater Camp to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, before a long descent toward Mweka Camp.

This is not a standard Kilimanjaro itinerary. Spending a night above 5,700m places exceptional demands on the body, so this climb is best suited to fit trekkers with appropriate preparation and, ideally, previous high-altitude experience. Guides should continuously assess altitude symptoms and conditions throughout the crater section.

Day by day

Your 8-day Shira Route Crater Camp itinerary

1Day

Shira Gate to Shira 1 Camp

~4 km2–3 hrs~3,500mMoorland

After the 4WD transfer to the western trailhead and park registration, the climb begins high on the Shira Plateau. The short trek to Shira 1 Camp is intentionally controlled because the route starts at significant altitude. The afternoon is used for rest, hydration and monitoring how the group responds to the elevation.

2Day

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

~6 km3–4 hrs3,500m → 3,840mHigh moorland

The group crosses the open Shira Plateau toward Shira 2. The terrain is broad and volcanic, with giant heathers and sweeping views of Kibo. The relatively short walking day gives the body additional time to adapt before the higher stages.

3Day

Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

~10 km6–8 hrs3,840m → 4,630m → 3,976mAlpine desert

This is the main acclimatization day. The route climbs toward Lava Tower at around 4,630m before descending into the Barranco Valley. The climb-high, sleep-low profile gives the group valuable exposure to higher altitude without sleeping at the day’s maximum elevation.

4Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

~5 km4–5 hrs3,976m → 4,050mAlpine desert

The morning starts with the Barranco Wall, a steep non-technical scramble where guides assist the group through the most exposed sections. The trail then winds across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp with views of Kibo’s southern glaciers.

5Day

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

~4 km3–4 hrs4,050m → 4,640mAlpine desert

The trail rises through increasingly barren volcanic terrain to Barafu Camp. After arriving, the focus is on eating, hydrating, checking equipment and resting before the demanding ascent toward the crater rim the following morning.

6Day

Barafu Camp to Crater Camp

~7 km6–7 hrs4,640m → 5,730mSummit zone

An early start begins the most demanding trekking day. The group climbs slowly over scree and ash toward Stella Point on the crater rim. From there, the route descends into Kibo’s crater to Crater Camp at approximately 5,730m. Conditions can be extremely cold, and the group remains under close guide supervision at this altitude.

7Day

Crater Camp to Uhuru Peak, then Mweka Camp

~9 km7–9 hrs5,730m → 5,895m → 3,080mCrater → forest

The final summit ascent begins in the early morning. From Crater Camp, the group climbs gradually to Uhuru Peak for sunrise and celebrates at 5,895m. After the summit, the route descends back through the high camp area and continues to Mweka Camp for a much-needed night at lower altitude.

8Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, then transfer to Moshi

~10 km3–4 hrs3,080m → 1,640mRainforest

The final descent passes through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. After park formalities, the group receives summit certificates and transfers to Moshi for a hot shower, rest and celebration.

Questions

Frequently asked

What makes the Crater Camp climb different?

The defining difference is the overnight at approximately 5,730m inside Kibo’s crater. Instead of descending immediately after reaching the crater rim, you spend the night in the summit zone and make the short final ascent to Uhuru Peak the following morning.

Is Crater Camp safe for everyone?

No. This is an extreme-altitude itinerary and is more demanding than a standard Kilimanjaro climb. It is best suited to well-prepared trekkers with suitable altitude experience. The guide team should make the final decision about whether conditions and the climber’s health allow the overnight to proceed.

Do I need technical climbing experience?

No technical climbing skills are required. The route is a trekking ascent, although the terrain above Barafu consists of steep, loose scree and ash and requires careful footwork.

How high is Crater Camp?

Crater Camp is approximately 5,730m above sea level, around 165m below Uhuru Peak. It is one of the highest camps used on Kilimanjaro and is significantly higher than Barafu Camp.

How cold is the crater overnight?

Temperatures can fall well below freezing after sunset, and wind can make conditions feel substantially colder. A high-quality cold-weather sleeping system and properly layered clothing are essential.

What is the price for the Shira Route Crater Camp Climb?

The published starting price is US$3,499 per person for the 8-day Shira Route Crater Camp Climb. Final pricing can vary according to group size, travel dates and requested arrangements.

Can the itinerary be changed if the weather is poor?

Yes. Mountain conditions and climber safety take priority. The guide team may adjust the itinerary, delay the crater section or descend earlier if weather, altitude symptoms or other conditions make the planned route unsafe.
