African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Private Shira Route
A private western approach across the Shira Plateau, with your own dedicated mountain crew, careful altitude management and a sunrise summit of Uhuru Peak.
Overview
The Shira Route is Kilimanjaro’s original western approach, beginning high on the Shira Plateau rather than climbing gradually through the rainforest. After registration at Londorossi Gate, you continue by vehicle toward the Shira Plateau before starting the trek around 3,500–3,600m.
The route crosses open moorland and the Shira Plateau before joining the Southern Circuit. From there, you climb to Lava Tower for a crucial acclimatization gain, descend to Barranco, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, and continue through Karanga and Barafu toward Uhuru Peak.
This is a non-technical climb, but the high starting elevation makes acclimatization especially important. The itinerary combines gradual trekking days with the “climb high, sleep low” principle before the final summit push.

Trip highlights
Day by day
After your private transfer from Moshi and registration at Londorossi Gate, you continue by vehicle toward the Shira Plateau. The trek begins high on the mountain with a short, gentle walk across heath and giant heather to Simba Camp, giving your private guide time to assess how you are responding to the altitude.
A steady private trek across the broad Shira Plateau brings you toward Shira 2 Camp. Your guide sets a comfortable pace while you cross open moorland, volcanic terrain and scenic viewpoints toward Kibo. The relatively easy day gives your body valuable time to adjust to the altitude.
This is the key acclimatization day. You climb gradually through the alpine desert to Lava Tower at 4,630m, spend time at altitude under your guide’s supervision, then descend to Barranco Camp. The climb-high, sleep-low pattern helps prepare you for the summit push.
Start with the iconic Barranco Wall. The ascent is steep but non-technical, using hands as well as feet in places. Your private guide helps you choose the safest line before the trail crosses ridges and valleys into Karanga Valley and climbs again to camp.
A short but steadily climbing day takes you to Barafu Camp, the main launch point for the summit. Your private crew prepares camp while you eat, hydrate and rest. After an early dinner, you settle in for a short sleep before the midnight summit attempt.
You leave around midnight for the steep summit push toward Stella Point and Uhuru Peak. Your dedicated guide team controls the pace carefully as you climb through the cold, dark upper slopes. After reaching the Roof of Africa around sunrise, you descend to Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
Your final descent passes back into the rainforest and ends at Mweka Gate. After park formalities and your summit certificate presentation, your private transfer takes you back to Moshi for a hot shower, a proper meal and a well-earned celebration.
The details
Good to know
No technical climbing skills are required, but you need good endurance for long uphill days and the demanding summit push. Training with regular hikes and cardio is strongly recommended.
January to March and June to October generally offer the most favorable trekking conditions, with drier weather and better trail visibility.
The route starts unusually high. Move slowly, stay hydrated, eat regularly and report headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue to your guide immediately.
Bring layered clothing, waterproof outerwear, trekking footwear, a warm sleeping bag and proper summit-night insulation. Quality equipment can be rented when available.
Choose your dates and take the western approach to Uhuru Peak.
Questions
It can be, but the high starting elevation of around 3,500–3,600m makes altitude management especially important. A private climb gives your guide team more flexibility to set the pace, monitor how you are responding and adjust the day’s rhythm when necessary.
Your climb is organised exclusively for your own group rather than being combined with unrelated trekkers. You have a dedicated guide team, private mountain logistics and greater flexibility around pacing, briefings and group needs.
No. The Shira Route is a non-technical trek. The Barranco Wall is steep and involves scrambling with hands and feet in places, but it does not require ropes, belaying or specialist rock-climbing skills.
The route is moderate to challenging. The main difficulty is not technical climbing but the combination of a high starting altitude, long trekking days and the demanding summit night. Good fitness and disciplined acclimatization are important.
The package is presented from US$2,075 per person. This starting rate is based on a private group arrangement and can change according to the number of climbers, travel dates, accommodation requirements and any additional services requested.
