Lemosho Climb + Zanzibar Beach Escape

Summit Africa’s highest peak on the scenic, less-crowded Lemosho Route — then fly straight to Zanzibar’s white-sand beaches to recover. One seamless 11-day trip.

11 days / 10 nights Summit 5,895m Moderate from US$3,390 / person

Overview

One trip: the summit, then the sand

The Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, starting deeper in untouched rainforest than the busier eastern routes. It’s quieter in the early days, crosses the wide, dramatic Shira Plateau, and follows the same “climb high, sleep low” pattern via Lava Tower that gives climbers a stronger chance of a comfortable summit.

Most climbers fly home directly after seven demanding days on the mountain — tired, undernourished, and straight into a long-haul flight. We build the trip differently: land back in Moshi, shower and rest one night, then fly on to Zanzibar the next morning. Three full days on the beach, with an optional Stone Town excursion, turn the climb into a proper holiday instead of an ordeal you fly home from.

Every climb is led by our senior local guides, supported by a well-cared-for crew, and carries emergency oxygen and daily health checks throughout.

Trip highlights

What you’ll experience

  • Lemosho’s quieter western approach — deeper rainforest and fewer climbers in the early days than the busier eastern routes.
  • The Shira Plateau & Lava Tower, both crossed as part of the route’s built-in acclimatization.
  • Sunrise on Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m.
  • A direct flight to Zanzibar straight after the climb — no exhausted long-haul home first.
  • Three full days on Zanzibar’s beaches, with an optional Stone Town excursion.

2Day

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

~8 km5–6 hrs2,825m → 3,505mMoorland

~10 km6–8 hrsup to 4,630mSemi-desert

The key acclimatization day: you climb high to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. “Climb high, sleep low” helps your body adjust ahead of summit night.

5Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

~5 km4–5 hrs3,960m → 3,995mAlpine desert

The day starts with the iconic Barranco Wall — a fun, non-technical scramble with huge views. A shorter day to Karanga Camp, your last stop before the final push to Barafu.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need climbing experience for the Lemosho Route?

No. Lemosho is a non-technical trek — there’s no rope work or climbing skill required. The main challenge is the altitude, which this itinerary is built to manage.

Why pair Zanzibar with the climb instead of flying straight home?

Seven demanding days on the mountain leave most climbers exhausted. A night to recover in Moshi followed by three days on the beach turns the trip into a proper holiday, rather than an ordeal you fly home from straight off the mountain.

How does the flight from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar work?

It’s a short domestic flight from Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), arranged as part of your package. We handle the booking and the transfers on both ends.

Is the price per person?

Yes. The exact figure depends on your group size, dates, and choice of beach resort — send us an enquiry and we’ll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote.

Can I extend my Zanzibar stay or add a Stone Town tour?

Yes. Both are easy to arrange — let us know when you enquire and we’ll build it into your itinerary and quote.
