8-Day Lemosho Route Climb

The unhurried version of Lemosho, with a full extra acclimatization night at Barranco — built for climbers who want the best possible odds of reaching the summit.

8 days / 7 nights Summit 5,895m Moderate from US$2,450 / person

Overview

Kilimanjaro’s best acclimatization profile

The 8-day Lemosho adds one extra night at Barranco Camp compared with our 7-day version, splitting the push toward Karanga into two calmer days. The extra 24 hours at altitude gives your body significantly more time to adjust, which is why this is widely considered one of the strongest acclimatization profiles on the entire mountain.

You still get the full Lemosho experience — the western rainforest, the Shira Plateau crossing, Lava Tower, and the Barranco Wall — just with more breathing room before the summit push.

Every climb is led by our senior local guides, supported by a well-cared-for crew, and carries emergency oxygen and daily health checks — so you can focus on the mountain, not the logistics.

~6 km3–4 hrs2,250m → 2,825mRainforest

After registration at Londorossi Gate, a short drive brings you to the trailhead. You climb gently through dense, untouched rainforest to Mti Mkubwa — “Big Tree Camp” — your first night under canvas.

2Day

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

~8 km5–6 hrs2,825m → 3,505mMoorland

The forest thins into moorland as you climb toward the edge of the Shira Plateau, with the summit visible for the first time as you reach camp.

3Day

A relatively gentle day crossing the vast, otherworldly Shira Plateau — one of the most scenic walks on the entire mountain, with Kibo’s summit dominating the skyline ahead.

4Day

Shira 2 to Barranco Camp, via Lava Tower

~10 km6–7 hrsup to 4,630mSemi-desert

A key acclimatization day: you climb high to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp, where you’ll spend two nights.

5Day

Acclimatization day at Barranco Camp

Short walks2–3 hrs3,960mAlpine desert

6Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

~5 km4–5 hrs3,960m → 3,995mAlpine desert

The day starts with the iconic Barranco Wall — a fun, non-technical scramble that rewards you with sweeping views. A shorter day to Karanga Camp for a well-earned rest.

7Day

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

~4 km3–4 hrs3,995m → 4,673mAlpine desert

A steady climb to Barafu, the summit base camp. You arrive early, eat well, and rest through the afternoon and evening — because tonight, you climb.

8Day

Summit day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Gate

~21 km14–18 hrs4,673m → 5,895m → 1,640mArctic → forest

Questions

Frequently asked

Why choose the 8-day over the 7-day Lemosho?

The 8-day version adds a full extra night at Barranco Camp. That additional 24 hours at altitude gives your body more time to adjust, meaningfully increasing your chance of a comfortable, successful summit.

Do I need climbing experience?

No. Lemosho is a non-technical trek — there’s no rope work required. The main challenge is the altitude, which this itinerary is specifically built to manage well.

How cold does it get on summit night?

Summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We’ll give you a full packing list, and warm gear is available to rent if you need it.

Is the price per person?

Yes. The exact figure depends on your group size and dates — get in touch and we’ll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote.

Can I add a safari or Zanzibar afterwards?

Absolutely. Many climbers pair the climb with a Serengeti safari or a Zanzibar beach stay, all arranged by our team as one seamless trip.
