African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Shira Route
A private 7-day Kilimanjaro adventure for two, beginning high on the Shira Plateau and crossing the mountain’s spectacular southern circuit to Uhuru Peak.
Overview
The Shira Route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west and begins high on the Shira Plateau. Unlike routes that spend several days climbing through the lower forest, you are transferred by 4WD to the high trailhead before beginning your trek. That gives you spectacular plateau scenery from the very start, but it also means the first days require careful pacing and attention to acclimatization.
For couples, this private climb keeps the experience personal and flexible. You trek together with your dedicated mountain crew, cross the open Shira landscape, join the southern circuit near Lava Tower, tackle the Barranco Wall, and continue to Barafu before the final overnight summit push to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m.
The route descends through Mweka after the summit, so you experience different landscapes on the way down. Your climb includes mountain accommodation, meals, drinking water, park and rescue fees, professional guides, porters and cook support, plus hotel accommodation around the trek.

Trip highlights
Day by day
After an early transfer by 4WD from the lower mountain to the Shira trailhead, you begin your climb across the high plateau. The short first trek is intentionally gentle because you are starting around 3,500m. Settle into camp, hydrate well, and let your body begin adjusting to the altitude.
You cross the broad Shira Plateau with Kibo rising ahead. The trail climbs gradually through open moorland before continuing toward Moir Hut, a remote high-altitude camp on the northern side of the plateau. The longer day provides valuable time walking at altitude while the scenery becomes increasingly stark and volcanic.
This is a key acclimatization day. You climb toward Lava Tower at 4,630m, spend time at the high point, then descend into the Barranco Valley. Sleeping considerably lower than your highest point of the day gives you the classic climb-high, sleep-low pattern that supports acclimatization.
The morning begins with the famous Barranco Wall. It is steep and hands-on in places, but it is a non-technical scramble rather than a rock-climbing pitch. Once above the wall, you traverse ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp with striking views of the mountain’s southern slopes.
You leave Karanga and climb steadily toward Barafu Camp, the exposed high camp used for the summit attempt. After arriving, the priority is food, hydration and rest. Your guides prepare you for the overnight summit push while you settle in for a short sleep.
You start around midnight for the slow, steady ascent toward Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak. The final section is demanding, with loose volcanic terrain and cold conditions, but reaching 5,895m at sunrise is the defining moment of the climb. After celebrating together, you descend through Barafu toward Mweka Camp for the night.
Your final trek descends through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out of the park and receiving your summit certificates, your vehicle meets you for the return transfer to Moshi and a well-earned hot shower and celebration.
The details
Good to know
The Shira Route starts around 3,500m after a 4WD transfer. The first days must be paced carefully, with hydration, rest and guide-led altitude monitoring.
January to March and June to October generally offer the driest and most reliable trekking conditions on Kilimanjaro.
This is a non-technical trek, but altitude is the main challenge. Your guides monitor your condition and can adjust the pace or response if symptoms develop.
With two climbers, the trek can be paced around your shared fitness, comfort and acclimatization rather than a larger group schedule.
Climb across the Shira Plateau, reach Uhuru Peak together, and celebrate the achievement from the Roof of Africa.
Questions
Yes. The route is a trek rather than a technical mountaineering climb, so previous climbing skills are not required. The main challenge is altitude, especially because the route starts high on the Shira Plateau, so good fitness and careful acclimatization are important.
Shira gives you a distinctive western approach and puts you on the high plateau from the beginning. It is scenic and initially quieter, but the high starting altitude makes it less forgiving for acclimatization than routes that gain altitude more gradually from the forest.
The itinerary reaches approximately 4,200m at Moir Hut and 4,673m at Barafu Camp before the summit. The highest point is Uhuru Peak at 5,895m.
Temperatures at the summit can fall well below freezing, with wind making conditions feel colder. A proper insulated summit jacket, warm layers, gloves, hat and suitable sleeping bag are essential. Personal gear can also be rented if required.
Yes. The published package price for this couples’ version is US$2,400 per person, based on two climbers travelling together in a private arrangement. The final quote should be confirmed against your exact travel dates before payment.
Yes. The climb can be combined with a Tanzania safari or a Zanzibar stay, allowing you to turn the summit trip into a longer Tanzania holiday.
