Family Shira Route Climb

A private family adventure across the dramatic Shira Plateau, combining carefully paced trekking, altitude management and an unforgettable sunrise at Uhuru Peak.

7 days / 6 nights Summit 5,895m Challenging from US$1,950 / person

Overview

A high-altitude western approach with big mountain scenery

The Shira Route is Kilimanjaro’s original western approach, beginning high on the Shira Plateau rather than climbing gradually through the rainforest. After registration at Londorossi Gate, you continue by vehicle toward the Shira Plateau before starting the trek around 3,500–3,600m.

The route crosses open moorland and the Shira Plateau before joining the Southern Circuit. From there, you climb to Lava Tower for a crucial acclimatization gain, descend to Barranco, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, and continue through Karanga and Barafu toward Uhuru Peak.

This is a non-technical climb, but the high starting elevation makes acclimatization especially important. The itinerary combines gradual trekking days with the “climb high, sleep low” principle before the final summit push.

Day by day

Your 7-day Family Shira Route itinerary

1Day

Shira Gate to Simba Camp

~4 km1–2 hrs3,500m → 3,500mHeath & moorland

After a private transfer from your hotel to Londorossi Gate for registration, your family continues by 4WD to the high Shira trailhead. The opening trek is intentionally short, giving everyone time to adjust to the sudden elevation while walking across open heath and moorland toward camp.

2Day

Simba Camp to Shira 2 Camp

~6 km2–4 hrs3,500m → 3,810mShira Plateau

A gentle family-paced traverse takes you deeper across the Shira Plateau. The landscape becomes wider and more dramatic as Kibo rises ahead. Regular breaks, hydration and a deliberately steady pace help the family settle into the altitude before the longer acclimatization day.

3Day

Shira 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

~10 km6–8 hrs3,810m → 4,630m → 3,976mAlpine desert

This is the key acclimatization day. The family climbs gradually toward Lava Tower at 4,630m, pauses for lunch and a health check, then descends to Barranco Camp. The climb-high, sleep-low profile gives the body valuable exposure to higher altitude while avoiding a night at Lava Tower.

4Day

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

~5 km4–5 hrs3,976m → 3,995mAlpine desert

After breakfast, the family takes on the famous Barranco Wall with the guides helping each member find a comfortable line. The trail then winds through high ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp. A shorter afternoon gives everyone time to eat, hydrate and rest.

5Day

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

~4 km4–5 hrs3,995m → 4,673mAlpine desert

A steady climb leads to Barafu Camp, the launch point for the summit. The family arrives early, settles into camp, has an early meal and rests during the afternoon. Your guides complete a final health and equipment check before the overnight summit departure.

6Day

Summit day: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, then to Mweka Camp

~17 km12–16 hrs4,673m → 5,895m → 3,068mArctic → forest

The family starts around midnight for the slow ascent toward Stella Point. From the crater rim, you continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m for sunrise and the defining family achievement of the trip. After time at the summit, you descend to Mweka Camp for dinner and a well-earned night of rest.

7Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and transfer to your hotel

~10 km3–4 hrs3,068m → 1,640mRainforest

Your final descent passes back into the lush rainforest and continues to Mweka Gate. After completing the park formalities and receiving summit certificates, your private vehicle transfers the family back to the hotel for a hot shower, a relaxed meal and time to celebrate together.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is the Family Shira Route suitable for children?

The Shira Route starts at a high elevation of around 3,500–3,600m, so it is not the best choice for young children. It is better suited to older teenagers and adults who are fit, comfortable with long hiking days and able to follow altitude-management guidance.

Do we need previous mountain climbing experience?

No technical climbing experience is required. The route is a non-technical trek, but every family member should have good general fitness and be prepared for sustained walking, uneven terrain, cold conditions and the effects of high altitude.

How will the guides manage different fitness levels within our family?

The climb is private, so the guide team can set a conservative pace around the needs of the group. Regular breaks, hydration stops and daily health checks are built into the experience. The summit attempt is always guided by each person’s health and condition rather than by pressure to keep to a fixed pace.

What is included in the US$1,950 price?

The package includes Kilimanjaro park and rescue fees, private mountain guides and support crew, mountain meals, purified water, camping equipment, dining facilities, emergency oxygen and health monitoring, private mountain transfers and two hotel nights in Moshi. Flights, visa, travel insurance, tips, personal equipment and personal expenses are not included.

How difficult is the summit day for a family?

Summit day is the most demanding part of the climb. It begins around midnight and can take 12–16 hours including the descent to Mweka Camp. The slow pace, frequent breaks and experienced guide team help, but every family member should prepare seriously for a long day at extreme altitude.

Can we make the climb private for our family only?

Yes. The package is designed around a private family group, allowing your guide team to focus on your group’s pace, rest periods, meal preferences and overall experience rather than following the schedule of unrelated climbers.
