African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Luxury Shira Route
A dramatic western approach across the Shira Plateau, with high-altitude acclimatization, the Barranco Wall and a sunrise summit of Uhuru Peak.
Overview
The Shira Route is Kilimanjaro’s original western approach, beginning high on the Shira Plateau rather than climbing gradually through the rainforest. After registration at Londorossi Gate, you continue by vehicle toward the Shira Plateau before starting the trek around 3,500–3,600m.
The route crosses open moorland and the Shira Plateau before joining the Southern Circuit. From there, you climb to Lava Tower for a crucial acclimatization gain, descend to Barranco, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, and continue through Karanga and Barafu toward Uhuru Peak.
This is a non-technical climb, but the high starting elevation makes acclimatization especially important. The itinerary combines gradual trekking days with the “climb high, sleep low” principle before the final summit push.

Trip highlights
Day by day
Your private transfer takes you from Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration, then higher by 4WD to the Shira trailhead. The first walk is deliberately short, allowing you to settle into the altitude while crossing open heath with broad views of Kibo.
A relaxed traverse across the open plateau brings you toward Shira 2. The luxury camp team prepares meals and refreshments while your guide keeps the pace deliberately easy at altitude. Clear weather can reveal Kibo and Mawenzi across the horizon.
This is the key acclimatization day. You climb gradually to Lava Tower at 4,630m, take time for lunch and a health check, then descend to Barranco Camp. The climb-high, sleep-low profile gives your body valuable exposure to higher altitude without sleeping there.
After breakfast, you tackle the dramatic Barranco Wall with your guide choosing the safest line over the rock. The trail then crosses a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga, where you have a comfortable afternoon to rest, hydrate and prepare for the summit phase.
A short but purposeful climb takes you to Barafu, the summit base camp. Your private mountain team settles you into camp, serves an early nourishing meal and checks your condition before you rest. The goal is to conserve energy for the midnight summit departure.
You leave around midnight for the slow ascent through the darkness toward Stella Point. From there, the trail continues around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. After sunrise, summit photographs and a well-earned celebration, you descend through the alpine zone to Mweka Camp for your final mountain night.
Your final descent passes back into the rainforest and ends at Mweka Gate. After collecting your summit certificate, a private vehicle takes you to your hotel for a hot shower, relaxed afternoon and celebratory dinner.
The details
Good to know
No technical climbing skills are required, but you need good endurance for long uphill days and the demanding summit push. Training with regular hikes and cardio is strongly recommended.
January to March and June to October generally offer the most favorable trekking conditions, with drier weather and better trail visibility.
The route starts unusually high. Move slowly, stay hydrated, eat regularly and report headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue to your guide immediately.
Bring layered clothing, waterproof outerwear, trekking footwear, a warm sleeping bag and proper summit-night insulation. Quality equipment can be rented when available.
Choose your dates and take the western approach to Uhuru Peak.
Questions

You have a dedicated guide team, premium mountain camping, private toilet facilities, upgraded sleeping equipment, a dedicated dining setup and a higher level of personal service throughout the climb.
It can be, but the high starting elevation is the key consideration. The Shira Route begins around 3,600m, so climbers should be comfortable with hiking at altitude and should follow the guide team's pacing and acclimatization instructions carefully. For first-time high-altitude trekkers, a longer itinerary can be preferable.
You stay in spacious premium mountain tents with upgraded sleeping mattresses and bedding. The camp setup includes a dedicated dining tent, private toilet facilities and washstand service, giving you considerably more comfort than standard camping while remaining fully on the mountain.
The package includes park and rescue fees, private guiding and support crew, premium camping equipment, meals and purified water, private toilet and dining facilities, emergency oxygen and health monitoring, private transfers and two hotel nights in Moshi. International flights, visa, insurance, crew tips and personal equipment are not included.
The itinerary uses a controlled pace and includes the Lava Tower acclimatization day, where you climb high and descend to sleep lower at Barranco. Guides monitor your condition throughout the climb, and oxygen and first-aid equipment are carried as part of the safety setup. Any summit decision is based on your health and conditions, not on schedule pressure.
