Kilimanjaro · Umbwe Route · Full Moon Summit
A challenging Umbwe ascent timed for a full moon summit night, combining the dramatic route with a memorable moonlit push toward Uhuru Peak.
Overview
The Umbwe Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s steepest and most direct approaches. This special departure keeps the demanding character of Umbwe while timing the summit attempt around the full moon. The extra lunar light can create a distinctive night-time atmosphere, although weather, cloud cover and exact moon phase can affect visibility.
This itinerary is designed for experienced trekkers who want the challenge of Umbwe and the unique atmosphere of a moonlit summit push. The mountain team manages pacing, acclimatization and summit timing carefully, with the exact departure date selected around the full moon.
The route combines steep rainforest, narrow ridges, the Barranco Wall, high alpine desert and the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. A full moon does not reduce the physical demands of Umbwe. Disciplined pacing, health checks, acclimatization decisions and emergency procedures remain essential throughout the climb.

Trip highlights
Day by day
Arrive in Moshi, meet your mountain guide and complete the pre-climb briefing, equipment check and full moon summit planning. Confirm the planned summit date and night-time logistics before the trek begins.
Transfer to Umbwe Gate for registration and begin the steep rainforest ascent toward Umbwe Cave Camp. The route is direct and demanding from the outset, so a slow, steady pace is essential.
Continue from Umbwe Cave Camp toward Barranco Camp, leaving the dense forest for increasingly dramatic mountain terrain. Arrive at Barranco and rest ahead of the acclimatization day.
Use the extra day at Barranco to acclimatize. Take a short guided hike, recover at camp and prepare clothing, headlamps and summit equipment for the upcoming full moon summit night.
Cross the Barranco Wall and continue toward Karanga Camp. The trail moves through alpine terrain with increasingly expansive views across the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Trek from Karanga to Barafu Camp. After arrival, rest, hydrate and have an early meal while the guide reviews the summit-night plan and checks the timing against the full moon.
Begin the summit push during the night, timed around the full moon. Climb slowly toward Stella Point and Uhuru Peak, using the moonlight where conditions allow. Celebrate the summit before descending toward Mweka Camp.
Descend through the forest from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. Complete the park formalities, meet the transfer team and continue to Moshi for a well-earned rest.
The details
Good to know
A private climb does not make the Umbwe Route easier. It remains a very steep and demanding route, so strong cardiovascular fitness, endurance and appropriate high-altitude preparation are recommended.
January to March and June to October are generally preferred for drier conditions. April and May can bring heavier rainfall, which can make the steep lower trail more difficult.
The extended itinerary adds acclimatization time at Barranco and before the summit push. Confirm the operator’s exact health-monitoring, oxygen and emergency procedures.
Bring proper high-altitude trekking layers, waterproof protection, trekking footwear and personal summit equipment. Confirm the operator’s final gear list before travel.
Secure your dates and prepare for a demanding Umbwe ascent with additional acclimatization time.
Questions
It is an Umbwe Route climb scheduled so the summit push takes place around a full moon. The extra lunar light can add a distinctive atmosphere to the night ascent, although visibility still depends on weather and cloud conditions.
The departure should be scheduled around the target full moon date, but the exact summit timing must remain flexible for safety, weather, altitude conditions and the operator’s logistics. The final date should be confirmed before booking.
Umbwe is one of Kilimanjaro’s steepest and most demanding approaches. This itinerary is better suited to fit, experienced trekkers who are comfortable with a strenuous high-altitude ascent and night-time summit push.
The published starting price is US$3,499 per person and is a placeholder pending confirmation. Final pricing should be confirmed according to group size, travel dates, accommodation and the exact services included.
No. The moon can provide additional natural light, but it does not reduce altitude, cold, wind, steep terrain or the physical demands of summit night. Headlamps and proper high-altitude equipment remain essential.
