Overview

The Northern Circuit, extended to Kilimanjaro’s highest camp

The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro’s longest established trekking route, circling the mountain through the western forests, across the Shira Plateau, and around the quiet northern slopes before approaching the summit from the east. Its gradual profile provides valuable time for acclimatization.

This 10-day version adds a rare overnight at Crater Camp after reaching Uhuru Peak. At around 5,750m, Crater Camp sits inside Kibo’s crater and close to the remaining ice fields and Furtwängler Glacier. It is an extreme high-altitude environment, so the extra acclimatization built into the Northern Circuit is particularly important.

The Crater Camp stay is subject to guide assessment and mountain conditions. Your safety takes priority, and the guide may recommend an alternative descent if the group is not sufficiently acclimatized to remain at this altitude.

Day by day

Your 10-day Northern Circuit Crater Camp itinerary

1Day

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

~6 km3–4 hrs2,360m → 2,895mRainforest

After registration at Londorossi Gate, drive to the trailhead and begin walking through the lush western rainforest. The opening stage is deliberately steady, introducing you to the mountain while keeping the first altitude gain manageable.

2Day

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

~8 km5–6 hrs2,895m → 3,505mHeath

The forest thins as you climb into the heath and moorland zone. The trail crosses streams and rolling terrain before reaching Shira Ridge and the open Shira Plateau, with the first clear views of Kibo.

3Day

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

~7 km3–4 hrs3,505m → 3,810mMoorland

A comparatively gentle acclimatization day across the wide Shira Plateau. The landscape becomes more open, with high-altitude vegetation and volcanic scenery surrounding the trail.

4Day

Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower, then Moir Hut

~14 km total5–7 hrs3,810m → 4,630m → 4,206mAlpine desert

You climb toward Lava Tower, gaining substantial altitude before descending to Moir Hut. This climb-high, sleep-lower profile is an important acclimatization exercise and prepares you for the extreme altitude ahead.

5Day

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

~12 km5–7 hrs4,206m → 4,023mAlpine desert

Leave Moir Valley with a climb over the Lent Hills before rejoining the Northern Circuit. The trail undulates across remote volcanic terrain, with expansive views toward the Kenyan and Tanzanian plains.

6Day

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp

~8 km5–7 hrs4,023m → 3,871mHeath

The route continues around the northern side of Kilimanjaro through a quieter landscape of ridges and valleys. The gradual loss of altitude gives your body another useful recovery window before the summit approach.

7Day

Third Cave Camp to School Hut

~5 km4–5 hrs3,871m → 4,755mAlpine desert

Climb steadily toward the Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. School Hut is the final camp before the summit section, so the afternoon is reserved for eating, hydrating, checking equipment and resting.

8Day

School Hut to Uhuru Peak, then down to Crater Camp

~7 km6–9 hrs4,755m → 5,895m → 5,750mArctic

The summit push begins in the early hours. A slow ascent over steep scree leads to the crater rim and onward around Kibo to Uhuru Peak. After reaching Africa’s highest point, descend about 1 km into the crater to Crater Camp. Your guide will closely assess your condition before confirming the overnight stay.

9Day

Crater Camp to Mweka Camp

~12 km4–6 hrs5,750m → 3,068mArctic → forest

After experiencing the crater environment, begin the long descent toward Mweka Camp, stopping around Barafu for a break and continuing into the upper forest. The dramatic change in landscape marks the end of the high-altitude section.

10Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, then transfer to your hotel

~10 km3–4 hrs3,068m → 1,640mRainforest

Complete the final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, collect your summit certificate and meet your vehicle for the transfer back to your hotel. A hot shower and proper celebration await after one of Kilimanjaro’s most demanding itineraries.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is Crater Camp?

Crater Camp is a high-altitude campsite inside Kibo Crater, around 5,750m above sea level and close to Furtwängler Glacier. It is one of the most unusual overnight experiences available on Kilimanjaro.

Why is the Northern Circuit used for Crater Camp?

The Northern Circuit is the longest Kilimanjaro route and provides more gradual altitude gain and acclimatization time than shorter approaches. That makes it a more appropriate framework for an itinerary involving an overnight at extreme altitude.

Do I sleep at Crater Camp after reaching Uhuru Peak?

On this itinerary, the planned sequence is School Hut to Uhuru Peak and then down into Crater Camp. However, the overnight should only proceed if your guide determines that your condition and acclimatization make it appropriate.

Is Crater Camp safe for everyone?

No. Sleeping around 5,750m carries significant altitude risk. A strong fitness level does not guarantee altitude tolerance. The guide team should monitor you closely and may change the plan if symptoms or conditions make the overnight unsafe.

How cold is Crater Camp?

Temperatures can fall well below freezing and can become extremely cold overnight. Bring serious cold-weather equipment suitable for high-altitude camping and follow the operator’s packing requirements.

Is the price per person?

The final price depends on group size, dates, accommodation arrangements and the operator’s Crater Camp logistics. Current website price: [TO CONFIRM]. Request a confirmed quotation before publishing or booking.
