Small-Group Northern Circuit Climb

Kilimanjaro’s longest, highest-success route on a fixed departure with a maximum of eight climbers — the shared cost of a group, the camaraderie of a team.

8 days / 7 nights Summit 5,895m Max 8 climbers from US$2,690 / person

Overview

The Northern Circuit, shared with a small team

The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro's longest route and the one with the highest published summit success rate — it loops the quiet northern slopes near the Kenyan border, a side of the mountain most climbers never see. This is the small-group way to do it: a fixed departure, capped at eight climbers.

A small group is the most affordable way onto the mountain, because the cost of guides, crew, and permits is shared across the team rather than carried by one private party. You get the same senior guides and the same careful acclimatization — at the friendliest price point we offer on this route.

And there's the camaraderie: eight is small enough that you'll know everyone by the first camp, and summit morning is something you reach together. Every climb carries emergency oxygen, twice-daily health checks, and a well-cared-for crew as standard.

Day by day

Your 8-day small-group Northern Circuit itinerary

1Day

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree Camp)

~6 km3–4 hrs2,250m → 2,835mRainforest

After registration at Londorossi Gate and a short drive to the trailhead, your group enters dense montane rainforest. A gentle first day brings you to Mti Mkubwa for your first night on the mountain and the first evening together as a team.

2Day

Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

~8 km5–6 hrs2,835m → 3,505mMoorland

The forest thins into heather and open moorland as you climb onto the edge of the Shira Plateau, with your first real views of Kibo's summit dome.

3Day

Shira 1 to Moir Hut

~13 km5–6 hrs3,505m → 4,200mSemi-desert / moorland

A long, gradual crossing of the Shira Plateau before branching north off the standard Lemosho line toward Moir Hut, a quiet camp beneath the Lent Hills.

4Day

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

~14 km6–7 hrs4,200m → 4,020mAlpine desert

The longest walking day of the trek, tracing the remote northern traverse with sweeping views across the Kenyan plains — and rarely another climber in sight.

5Day

Buffalo Camp to Rongai Third Cave Camp

~9 km4–5 hrs4,020m → 3,800mAlpine desert

The circuit continues east, joining the upper reaches of the Rongai line. A shorter day that lets your body settle before the final push toward summit camp.

6Day

Rongai Third Cave to School Hut

~6 km4 hrs3,800m → 4,800mAlpine desert

A short, steady climb to School Hut, your final camp before the summit attempt. An early dinner and early lights-out — summit night starts around midnight.

7Day

Summit day: School Hut to Uhuru Peak, then to Mweka Camp

~15 km12–14 hrs4,800m → 5,895m → 3,100mArctic → forest

You set off in darkness for the summit push, reaching Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — around sunrise, together as a group. After summit photos, a long descent brings you down through changing terrain to Mweka Camp for the night.

8Day

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, and transfer to your hotel

~10 km3–4 hrs3,100m → 1,640mRainforest

A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. We then transfer you back to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration with your team.

Questions

Frequently asked

How many people are in a small group?

We cap small-group departures at eight climbers. That's small enough for the guides to keep close track of everyone, and for the group to feel like a team rather than a crowd.

Can I join on my own?

Yes — most small-group climbers join solo or as a pair. It's one of the most common ways to climb Kilimanjaro, and you'll be part of the team by the first camp.

Why is this cheaper than a private climb?

The fixed costs of guides, crew, and permits are shared across the whole group rather than carried by one party. You get the same route and the same standards at a lower per-person price.

How cold does it get on summit night?

Summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We'll give you a full packing list, and warm gear is available to rent if you need it.

Is the price per person?

Yes. The exact figure depends on the departure and final group size — send us an enquiry and we'll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote.
