African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Rongai Route · VIP
Kilimanjaro’s quietest route, approached from the remote north, climbed with a dedicated senior guide, first-choice campsites, and a private vehicle throughout.
Overview
The Rongai Route is Kilimanjaro’s only northern approach, starting near the Kenyan border and climbing through terrain most operators never show their clients. It’s the driest route on the mountain and the strongest choice during the shorter rains, when the more popular southern routes turn wet and crowded.
Our VIP package builds on that natural advantage with a level of service most Kilimanjaro operators simply can’t offer: a dedicated senior guide assigned to you for the full climb, first-choice campsite pitches secured ahead of the crowd, a private vehicle for every transfer, and welcome and farewell dinners that bookend the climb properly.
The 7-day itinerary carries a built-in acclimatization night at Mawenzi Tarn — camped in the shadow of Kilimanjaro’s dramatic second peak — before the push to Uhuru Peak via the high alpine desert known as the Saddle.

Trip highlights
Day by day
Your private vehicle collects you for the drive to the Nalemuru Gate near the Kenyan border. The trail climbs gently through pine forest into open moorland, arriving at Simba Camp — a quiet first night, with none of the crowds found on the southern routes.
A longer day across rolling moorland, with the jagged silhouette of Mawenzi Peak growing closer with every hour. Your crew has your first-choice campsite pitched and waiting at Kikelewa Cave.
A short but steep climb onto the flanks of Mawenzi, ending at Mawenzi Tarn — one of the most dramatic camps on the mountain, set directly beneath the peak’s spires.
Your extra acclimatization night, built into every 7-day Rongai climb. A gentle exploration hike around Mawenzi’s base helps your body adjust before the push toward Kibo, with the rest of the day free to relax at camp.
You cross the Saddle — a vast, wind-swept high-altitude desert stretching between Mawenzi and Kibo, and Africa’s largest. An early arrival at Kibo Hut gives you a full afternoon and evening to rest before summit night.
You set off shortly after midnight, climbing through scree to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After your summit photos, the long descent takes you down and off the mountain’s northern side to Horombo, joining the Marangu path.
A final descent through moorland into rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. Your private vehicle takes you straight back for a hot shower and a proper farewell dinner.

Questions
A senior guide dedicated to your climb alone, first-choice campsite pitches secured ahead of other groups, a private vehicle for every transfer, and welcome and farewell dinners bookending the trip — on top of everything included in a standard Rongai climb.
Rongai is Kilimanjaro’s quietest trail, approaching from the remote north with none of the crowding you’ll see on Machame or Lemosho. It’s also the driest route, and the strongest option if you’re travelling during the shorter rains.
No. Rongai is a non-technical trek — there’s no rope work or climbing skill required. The main challenge is the altitude, which the built-in acclimatization night at Mawenzi Tarn is designed to manage.
Summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We’ll give you a full packing list, and warm gear is available to rent if you need it.
