Private Rongai Route Climb

Kilimanjaro’s only northern approach — quieter trails, the driest route on the mountain, and a departure reserved entirely for your own group.

7 days / 6 nights Summit 5,895m Private — your group only from US$2,350 / person

Overview

Kilimanjaro’s quietest route, on a schedule that’s entirely yours

Rongai is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It sees far fewer climbers than Machame or Lemosho, which means quieter camps, less queuing on the trail, and a more remote, expedition-style feel from day one.

It’s also the driest route on the mountain — the northern slopes sit in a rain shadow, which makes Rongai the most dependable choice if you’re climbing in the shoulder or rainy season. You ascend through Rongai and descend via the Marangu side, so you see different scenery on the way up and the way down, camping beneath the jagged spire of Mawenzi Peak along the way.

This is our private departure: your party climbs alone, on dates you choose, with a dedicated guide and crew assigned only to your group — no joining an existing group, no fixed calendar to work around.

Day by day

Your 7-day private Rongai itinerary

1Day

Rongai Gate (Nalemuru) to Simba Camp

~8 km4–5 hrs1,950m → 2,625mMontane forest

Your private group is transferred to the quiet Nalemuru (Rongai) Gate on the mountain’s northern side. A gentle first day climbs through pine forest and farmland with far fewer climbers on the trail than the southern routes.

2Day

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Cave

~11 km5–6 hrs2,625m → 3,600mMoorland

The forest thins into open moorland with wide views north toward Kenya. Kikelewa Cave is a smaller, more sheltered camp — one of the quieter nights you’ll spend on the mountain.

3Day

Kikelewa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn

~4 km3–4 hrs3,600m → 4,330mAlpine desert

A short, steep climb onto open alpine desert, camping directly beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi — one of the most dramatic campsites on the mountain.

4Day

Acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn

Optional side hike2–3 hrs4,330mAlpine desert

A full day to acclimatize, with optional short walks around the tarn. Because this is a private departure, the pace and timing of the day are set to suit your group, not a fixed group schedule.

5Day

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut

~9 km4–5 hrs4,330m → 4,700mAlpine desert

You cross the “Saddle,” a stark, moon-like plateau between Mawenzi and Kibo, arriving at Kibo Hut — base camp for tomorrow’s summit push. An early dinner and rest, because tonight you climb.

6Day

Summit day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Horombo Hut

~21 km13–15 hrs4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720mArctic → moorland

A midnight start for the long climb via Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa, for sunrise. You then descend the southern side of the mountain — a different route down — all the way to Horombo Hut for the night.

7Day

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, and transfer to your hotel

~20 km5–6 hrs3,720m → 1,860mRainforest

A final long descent through moorland into rainforest, arriving at Marangu Gate for your summit certificate. Your private vehicle transfers you back to your hotel to celebrate.

Questions

Frequently asked

What does "private" actually mean on this climb?

It means your guide, crew, tents, and schedule are dedicated to your party only — no other climbers are added to your group, and you're not slotted into a fixed departure date. You choose when you climb.

Why choose Rongai over Machame or Lemosho?

Rongai is far quieter, with noticeably fewer climbers on the trail and at camp, and it's the driest route on the mountain — a strong choice if your dates fall in the shoulder or rainy season, or if you simply prefer a more remote feel.

How cold does it get at Mawenzi Tarn and on summit night?

Nights at Mawenzi Tarn regularly drop below freezing, and summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We'll give you a full packing list, and warm gear is available to rent if needed.

Is the price per person?

Yes. The exact figure depends on your group size and dates — send us an enquiry and we'll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote for your private departure.

Can I add a safari or Zanzibar afterwards?

Yes. Many climbers pair a private Rongai climb with a Serengeti safari or a Zanzibar beach stay afterward, arranged by our team as one seamless private trip.
