High plateau and open trail on Kilimanjaro's northern Rongai side

Kilimanjaro · Rongai Route

7-Day Rongai Route Climb

Kilimanjaro’s quietest path to the summit, approaching from the dry northern side with an acclimatization night at Mawenzi Tarn.

7 days / 6 nights Summit 5,895m Moderate from US$2,350 / person

Overview

Kilimanjaro’s remote northern approach

The Rongai Route is the only path that climbs Kilimanjaro from the north, close to the Kenyan border. It sees far fewer climbers than the southern routes, which means quieter camps and a genuine sense of remoteness — and because it sits in Kilimanjaro’s rain shadow, it’s also the most reliable option during the shoulder and rainy seasons.

We run it over seven days, adding an acclimatization night at Mawenzi Tarn before the push toward Kibo. That extra night at altitude gives your body time to adjust, which meaningfully improves your odds of a strong, steady summit push rather than a rushed one.

You ascend via Rongai and descend via the Marangu side of the mountain, so you experience two different faces of Kilimanjaro in a single trip. Every climb is led by our senior local guides, supported by a well-cared-for crew, and carries emergency oxygen and daily health checks.

Day by day

Your 7-day Rongai itinerary

1Day

Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

~8 km3–4 hrs1,950m → 2,650mPine forest

After your morning briefing and transfer to Rongai Gate on the mountain’s northern side, you begin a gentle climb through pine forest and farmland. A comfortable first day brings you to Simba Camp, named for the buffalo and elephant tracks sometimes seen nearby.

2Day

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp

~11 km5–6 hrs2,650m → 3,600mMoorland

The forest opens into rolling moorland with wide views back toward Kenya. A longer day, but a steady gradient, ending at Kikelewa Camp tucked below the Mawenzi ridgeline.

3Day

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

~5 km3–4 hrs3,600m → 4,330mAlpine desert

A short but steep morning climb brings you to Mawenzi Tarn, camped in a dramatic bowl directly beneath Mawenzi Peak’s jagged spires. The short distance is deliberate — it leaves the afternoon free to rest and adjust to the altitude.

4Day

Acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn

~3 km2–3 hrsStay at 4,330mAlpine desert

This is the extra night that sets the 7-day Rongai apart. A gentle acclimatization walk higher onto Mawenzi’s lower slopes, then back down to sleep at the same camp — “climb high, sleep low” — before crossing the Saddle toward Kibo tomorrow.

5Day

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut Camp

~9 km4–5 hrs4,330m → 4,700mThe Saddle / lunar desert

You cross the vast, flat Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo — the largest high-altitude desert in Africa. Camp is made at Kibo, the final staging point before summit night, where you eat early and rest through the afternoon.

6Day

Summit day: Kibo to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Horombo

~21 km12–15 hrs4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720mArctic → moorland

You set off around midnight, climbing via Gilman’s Point to reach Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — for sunrise. After summit photos, you descend the southeastern Marangu side of the mountain all the way to Horombo Camp for a well-earned rest.

7Day

Horombo Camp to Marangu Gate, and transfer to your hotel

~20 km5–6 hrs3,720m → 1,860mRainforest

A long final descent through moorland into rainforest, exiting at Marangu Gate on the opposite side of the mountain from where you started. You receive your summit certificate here, then transfer back to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why choose Rongai over Machame or Lemosho?

Rongai is far quieter — you’ll share the trail and camps with fewer climbers — and its northern, rain-shadow position makes it the most reliable route during the wetter shoulder seasons. It trades some scenic variety for solitude and dependable weather.

Why choose the 7-day over the 6-day Rongai?

The 7-day route adds an acclimatization night at Mawenzi Tarn. That extra time at altitude gives your body more chance to adjust, which meaningfully increases your odds of a strong summit compared with the faster 6-day version.

Do I need climbing experience?

No. Rongai is a non-technical trek — there’s no rope work or climbing skill required. The main challenge is the altitude, which our itinerary is specifically designed to manage.

How cold does it get on summit night?

Summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We’ll give you a full packing list, and warm gear is available to rent if you need it.

Is the price per person?

Yes. The exact figure depends on your group size and dates — send us an enquiry and we’ll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote.
