African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Marangu Route + Zanzibar
Summit Africa’s highest peak via the hut-accommodation “Coca-Cola Route,” then trade your trekking boots for white sand and the Indian Ocean.
Overview
The Marangu Route is Kilimanjaro’s original path to the summit, nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route” for how established it is. It’s also the only route on the mountain where you sleep in mountain huts rather than tents — a genuine comfort advantage if you’d rather not deal with camp setup after a long day’s walking.
We run it over six days, not five, adding an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut before you push on to Kibo and the summit. That extra day follows the same “climb high, sleep low” logic used on every route we operate, and it matters: Marangu’s ascent and descent share the same path, so there’s no long high-altitude loop to help your body adjust the way there is on Machame or Lemosho — the built-in acclimatization day is what compensates for that.
From Mweka… from Marangu Gate, rather, you transfer back to Moshi, then fly (or transfer by road and ferry — to be confirmed) to Zanzibar for beach days, reef color, and the option of a Stone Town history walk before you fly home.

Trip highlights
Day by day
After your briefing and transfer to Marangu Gate, a gentle, well-shaded rainforest walk brings you to Mandara Hut for your first night on the mountain.
You leave the forest behind for open moorland, with clear views back toward Mawenzi Peak on a good day. A longer walking day to your second hut.
A short, optional day hike toward Zebra Rocks or the base of Mawenzi, then back to Horombo to sleep. This is the built-in acclimatization day that gives your body time to adjust before Kibo.
The vegetation thins to bare alpine desert as you cross the “saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo. You arrive at Kibo Hut early to rest ahead of tonight’s summit push.
Departing around midnight, you climb steadily to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After summit photos, you descend all the way back to Horombo for the night.
A long final descent back through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate, then transfer to your Moshi hotel for a proper shower and rest.
A relaxed morning in Moshi before your onward transfer to Zanzibar. By afternoon you’re checked into your beachfront hotel with nothing left to climb.
A full free day to recover on the beach, or swap it for a guided walk through Stone Town’s winding streets, spice markets, and Swahili-Arabic architecture.
Another unstructured day by the Indian Ocean — swim, dive, snorkel a reef, or simply do nothing at all. Optional water-sports excursions can be arranged locally.
Transfer to Zanzibar Airport for your onward or international flight home.
The details
Good to know
Marangu is the only route with hut sleeping — dormitory-style, shared with other climbing groups, not private rooms.
No technical skills needed, but good general fitness helps, especially on the long summit-night and descent days.
Because Marangu’s ascent and descent share the same path, the built-in Horombo acclimatization day matters more here than on looped routes. Twice-daily health checks and emergency oxygen are standard throughout.
Onward travel to Zanzibar is typically a short domestic flight from Kilimanjaro; exact routing and timing are confirmed with your booking.

Questions
Marangu is the only route with mountain-hut accommodation instead of tents — no camp setup, and a bunk and mattress waiting at the end of each day. It’s a genuine comfort trade-off worth considering if that matters more to you than route scenery.
It’s often perceived that way because of the huts and gentler daily distances, but the shared ascent/descent path means less time to acclimatize than on longer looped routes. Our 6-day itinerary adds a dedicated acclimatization day specifically to offset that.
It’s arranged as one seamless trip alongside your climb — transfers, beach hotel, and any optional Stone Town time are coordinated by our team so you’re not managing two separate bookings.
