Marangu Climb & Serengeti Safari

Sleep in mountain huts on Kilimanjaro's oldest route, then trade the trail for a 4WD as you chase wildlife across the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.

10 days / 9 nights Summit 5,895m Moderate from US$3,750 / person

Overview

The comfort of huts, then the plains of the Serengeti

The Marangu Route — nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route” — is the oldest path up Kilimanjaro and the only one where you sleep in dormitory-style mountain huts instead of a tent. Bunk beds, a roof, and a communal dining hall each night make it the most comfortable way to approach the climb, even though the altitude and the effort to reach Uhuru Peak are exactly the same as any other route.

We run it over six days rather than the bare-minimum five, adding an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. Marangu is the only route where the descent retraces the ascent path, so that extra day at altitude is what meaningfully improves your summit odds — on the rushed 5-day version, most of what works against climbers is pace, not terrain.

After you're back down and showered in Moshi, we hand you off to a driver-guide for four days on safari: a full day chasing game across the Serengeti's open plains, then a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and one of the densest wildlife concentrations on the continent.

Day by day

Your 10-day Marangu & Serengeti itinerary

1Day

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

~8 km5–7 hrs1,860m → 2,700mRainforest

After registration and permits at Marangu Gate, you climb through dense rainforest — look out for blue monkeys along the way. Your first night is spent at Mandara Hut, with proper beds, mattresses, and flush toilets.

2Day

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

~12 km6–8 hrs2,700m → 3,720mMoorland

The forest thins into open moorland as you climb toward Horombo. On clear days you'll get your first proper views of both Kibo and Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro's twin volcanic peaks.

3Day

Acclimatization day at Horombo Hut

~5 km3–4 hrs3,720mMoorland

A short side hike toward the Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi viewpoint, then back to Horombo to sleep at the same altitude. This is the day that makes the difference on a route where the path up and down never changes.

4Day

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

~10 km6–8 hrs3,720m → 4,700mAlpine desert

You cross the Saddle, a stark, high-altitude desert between Kibo and Mawenzi, to reach Kibo Hut — the last stop before summit night. Basic facilities, an early dinner, and lights out well before midnight.

5Day

Summit day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then down to Horombo Hut

~21 km12–15 hrs4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720mArctic → moorland

You set off around midnight, climbing scree switchbacks to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak for sunrise — the Roof of Africa. From there it's a long descent, retracing your steps all the way back down to Horombo for the night.

6Day

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, transfer to Moshi

~20 km5–6 hrs3,720m → 1,860mRainforest

A final descent back through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you collect your summit certificate. A vehicle meets you for the transfer to your hotel in Moshi — hot shower, real bed, and a celebration dinner.

7Day

Rest morning in Moshi, transfer to the Serengeti

Transfer dayRest & travelMoshi → SerengetiSafari begins

Full day4WD safari vehicleSerengeti National ParkBig Five territory

Full day4WD safari vehicleNgorongoro Conservation AreaCrater floor

Good to know

Before you book this trip

Fitness

No technical climbing skills needed — the terrain is gentle. The real demand is summit night: 12–15 hours of walking at altitude, so cardio fitness matters more than climbing experience.

Best time

The dry seasons — January to March and June to October — give the clearest climbing conditions and reliable safari game viewing.

Safety & acclimatization

Marangu's ascent and descent share the same path, so the built-in acclimatization day at Horombo does real work. Twice-daily health checks and emergency oxygen are standard throughout the climb.

Climb then safari

Day 7 is a genuine rest morning before you're handed off to your safari driver-guide — there's no same-day rush from the mountain straight onto a game drive.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need climbing experience?

No. Marangu is a non-technical trek with no rope work — it's also the gentlest gradient on the mountain. The real challenge is altitude on summit night, which the 6-day itinerary is built to manage.

Is Marangu really the easiest route?

The terrain is the easiest, yes, and the hut accommodation is more comfortable than a tent. But the ascent and descent follow the same path, so there's less scenic variety, and climbers who choose the rushed 5-day version tend to have a lower summit success rate. Our 6-day build adds the acclimatization day specifically to correct for that.

How does the safari half of the trip work?

After you descend and rest a night in Moshi, a driver-guide takes over for the road (or light-aircraft) transfer to the Serengeti. You get a full day of game drives there, then move on to a full day in the Ngorongoro Crater before transferring back to the airport.

Is the price per person?

Yes. The exact figure depends on group size, dates, and your choice of safari lodge — send us an enquiry and we'll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote.

Can I swap the Serengeti extension for Zanzibar instead?

Yes — we also run a Marangu + Zanzibar combo for climbers who'd rather end the trip on a beach than a game drive. Let us know your preference when you enquire.
