Women’s Group Marangu Route Climb

Kilimanjaro’s most accessible route, done in the company of other women — hut accommodation, a gentle start, and a built-in acclimatization day.

6 days / 5 nights Summit 5,895m Moderate from US$1,930 / person

Overview

Climb Kilimanjaro your way, alongside other women

The Marangu Route — nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route” — is the most accessible way up Kilimanjaro. It’s also the only route where you sleep in mountain huts rather than tents, which removes a layer of camping logistics that puts some first-time high-altitude trekkers off.

We run it over six days rather than five, adding an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. That extra day follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle and gives your body real time to adjust, which is why the 6-day version has noticeably better summit odds than the rushed 5-day option.

This departure is reserved for a small, fixed cohort of women climbing together — same pace, same camp each night, same summit push. You’re still backed by our full professional crew, with emergency oxygen and twice-daily health checks built in as standard.

Trip highlights

What you’ll experience

  • The only hut-based route on Kilimanjaro — no tents to pitch, a dormitory bunk waiting at every camp.
  • The gentlest early gradient of any route, ideal if this is your first high-altitude trek.
  • An extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, for a safer climb and better summit odds.
  • Sunrise on Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895m.
  • A small, fixed cohort of women climbing on the same schedule — company on the mountain, not a solo trek.

Day by day

Your 6-day Marangu itinerary

1Day

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

~8 km3–4 hrs1,860m → 2,700mRainforest

After your morning briefing and transfer to Marangu Gate, a well-graded path climbs steadily through rainforest to Mandara Hut — your first night in a mountain dormitory hut.

2Day

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

~12 km5–6 hrs2,700m → 3,720mMoorland

The forest opens into moorland, with heather and giant lobelia along the trail and Kibo’s summit visible on clear days. A longer day, ending at Horombo Hut.

3Day

Acclimatization day at Horombo Hut

~7 km round trip3–4 hrsup to ~4,000mAlpine moorland

A short day hike up toward Zebra Rocks and back, then rest at Horombo. “Climb high, sleep low” helps your body adjust and is the reason this 6-day version outperforms the rushed 5-day route.

4Day

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

~10 km6–7 hrs3,720m → 4,700mAlpine desert

The landscape turns to stark alpine desert as you cross the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo. You arrive at Kibo Hut early, eat well, and rest through the afternoon — because tonight, you climb.

5Day

Summit day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then down to Horombo Hut

~21 km12–15 hrs4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720mArctic → moorland

You set off around midnight for the steep climb to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — for sunrise. After summit photos, you descend all the way back down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.

6Day

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, and transfer to your hotel

~20 km6–7 hrs3,720m → 1,860mForest

A long final descent back through the forest to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. We then transfer you back to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration.

Good to know

Before you book this climb

Fitness

No technical skills needed. Marangu is the most accessible route, but good general fitness still helps — train with hikes and cardio beforehand.

Best time

The dry seasons — January to March and June to October — offer the clearest, most reliable conditions.

Huts, not tents

Marangu is the only route with dormitory-style mountain huts rather than camping. Bring earplugs and your own sleeping bag liner for shared rooms.

Safety & acclimatization

Twice-daily health checks, emergency oxygen, and the extra Horombo acclimatization night are built in as standard.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need climbing experience?

No. Marangu is a non-technical trek on a well-graded path — there’s no rope work or climbing skill required. The main challenge is the altitude, which our 6-day itinerary is specifically designed to manage.

Why is Marangu a good choice for a women’s group climb?

It’s the gentlest and most accessible route on the mountain, and the only one with hut accommodation instead of tents — which removes a lot of camping logistics. That makes it a comfortable, low-friction choice for a first shared high-altitude trip.

Why choose the 6-day over the 5-day Marangu?

The 6-day route adds an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. That extra day gives your body more time to adjust, which meaningfully increases your chance of reaching the summit compared with the rushed 5-day version.
