African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Marangu Route
A gentler, hut-to-hut ascent of Kilimanjaro's original route — paced for two, with real beds and a shared summit sunrise.
Overview
Marangu is the only route on Kilimanjaro where you sleep in mountain huts rather than tents — real beds, a dining hall, and shelter from the weather each night. It's also the most gradual ascent on the mountain, which is why so many couples choose it: you get to experience the climb together without the added toll of tent life.
We run it over six days, adding an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. That extra day matters — Marangu's shorter daily distances make it tempting to rush, and the acclimatization day is what protects your summit chances and keeps the pace enjoyable rather than punishing.
This package is built around the two of you: private guiding and crew, a shared pace, and a mountain team briefed to support you as a pair, not slot you into a mixed group.

Trip highlights
Day by day
After registration at Marangu Gate, you set off through dense rainforest — the gentlest first day on the mountain, and a good one to walk side by side and settle into the climb. You'll spend the night at Mandara Hut, Kilimanjaro's most sheltered first-night camp.
You leave the last of the forest behind — including the "monkey forest" — and climb into open moorland with your first real views of Kibo and Mawenzi. Horombo Hut is your base for two nights.
A short, guided walk toward the saddle viewpoint, then back down to sleep at Horombo again. This is the day that meaningfully improves your summit odds — and it's an easy, unhurried one for the two of you to enjoy the views without pressure.
You cross the open, lunar Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Kibo Hut is stark and cold, but it's the last stop before summit night — you'll eat early and rest as much as you can.
You set off around midnight, climbing steadily to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then on around to Uhuru Peak for sunrise — the Roof of Africa, together. After summit photos, you descend all the way back down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
A long, satisfying final descent back through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you'll both receive your summit certificates before we transfer you to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration.
The details
Good to know
The gentlest gradient on the mountain — good general fitness helps, but there's no scrambling or technical terrain.
The dry seasons — January to March and June to October — give the clearest skies and driest trail conditions.
Twice-daily health checks, emergency oxygen, and the extra night at Horombo are built in as standard.
Marangu is the only route with mountain-hut accommodation — bunks, a dining hall, and shelter each night.

Questions
Yes — it's the gentlest gradient on the mountain and the only route with hut accommodation, which many couples find more comfortable than six nights in a tent.
Marangu huts are dormitory-style by default.
Six days includes the acclimatization day at Horombo, which is the version we recommend. A rushed 5-day Marangu climb has a meaningfully lower success rate.
