African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Marangu Route
The gentlest way onto Kilimanjaro, paced for climbing as a family — sleeping-hut accommodation, shorter daily walks, and an extra acclimatization day built in.
Overview
The Marangu Route — nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route” — is the only path up Kilimanjaro with sleeping huts instead of tents, and it climbs and descends the same well-established trail. That combination of simpler logistics and a gentler gradient is exactly why it’s the route we recommend for families climbing together.
Our Family itinerary stretches the standard 6-day Marangu schedule to 7 days by splitting the steepest stretches into shorter walking days and adding a second acclimatization day at Horombo Hut. Nobody is rushed, and everybody — from teenagers to grandparents — gets more time to adjust to the altitude before summit night.
Every family group climbs with senior local guides, a dedicated support crew, and daily health checks with a pulse oximeter, so parents can focus on the experience rather than the risk management.

Trip highlights
Day by day
An easy, well-shaded first day through rainforest, with a good chance of spotting colobus monkeys. A gentle introduction to the mountain for climbers of any age.
The forest opens into moorland with heather and giant lobelias. A longer walking day, taken at a steady, unhurried pace with regular rest stops.
A short, easy walk toward Zebra Rocks with views of Mawenzi peak, then back to the same hut for a second night. This extra day is what makes the pace genuinely family-friendly.
The trail crosses the “saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo, an open, high-altitude desert. You reach Kibo Hut in the afternoon and rest ahead of the summit push.
A midnight start for the climb to Gilman’s Point and on to Uhuru Peak for sunrise, the highest point in Africa. After summit photos, you descend all the way back to Horombo Hut to sleep.
Rather than descending all the way to the gate in one push, the Family itinerary splits the descent here — a shorter, easier day after the physical demands of summit night.
A relaxed final descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where the whole family receives their summit certificates, followed by a transfer back to your hotel.
The details
Good to know
No technical skills needed. Regular walking or hiking beforehand helps every family member arrive ready.
The dry seasons — January to March and June to October — give the clearest conditions for a family group.
Twice-daily health checks, emergency oxygen, and two acclimatization nights at Horombo are built in as standard.
We assess suitability by fitness and altitude experience, not age alone — get in touch and we’ll advise for your children’s ages.

Questions
It’s the only route with sleeping huts instead of tents, it uses the same trail for the ascent and descent, and our 7-day Family itinerary adds a second acclimatization day and shorter daily walks — all of which make it easier to manage as a group with mixed ages and fitness levels.
This depends on the individual child’s fitness, altitude experience, and the specific route conditions at the time. Send us your children’s ages and we’ll advise honestly on whether this itinerary is a good fit.
Marangu huts are dormitory-style by default. Ask us when you enquire and we’ll confirm what’s available for your dates.
Summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We’ll give you a full packing list for every family member, and warm gear is available to rent if needed.
Yes. The exact figure depends on your family’s group size and dates — send us an enquiry and we’ll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote.
