African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Marangu Route · Luxury
The classic “Coca-Cola Route” to the Roof of Africa, elevated: senior guiding, premium hotel nights, and enhanced service from gate to summit.
Overview
The Marangu Route is Kilimanjaro's oldest and most established path to the summit — nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route” for its long history and well-built infrastructure. It's also the only route on the mountain where you sleep in mountain huts rather than tents, and the only one where the descent retraces the ascent path.
Our Luxury version keeps that familiar, gentler route structure and adds what a discerning climber actually notices: a senior mountain guide leading your climb, an enhanced crew ratio, elevated in-hut dining prepared by our lead mountain chef, and premium hotel nights in Moshi before and after — with private vehicle transfers throughout.
We build in a full acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, run twice-daily health checks, and carry emergency oxygen as standard — so the extra comfort never comes at the cost of a safe, well-paced ascent.

Trip highlights
Day by day
After a private transfer from your hotel and registration at Marangu Gate, you climb gently through montane rainforest to Mandara Hut, your first night's stop in one of the mountain's oldest hut camps.
The forest opens into moorland as you climb steadily to Horombo Hut, with Kibo's summit and the jagged Mawenzi peak visible across the saddle on a clear day.
A short, optional acclimatization hike towards the Mawenzi viewpoint or Zebra Rocks, then back to Horombo to rest. This built-in day is the key difference between our 6-day itinerary and the rushed standard version.
A steady climb across the barren “saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut, base camp for the summit attempt. An early dinner and a few hours' rest follow — tonight, you climb.
Setting off just after midnight, you climb steadily to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then follow the rim to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After summit photos, you descend all the way back to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
A long final descent back through the forest to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. Your private vehicle then returns you to your Moshi hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration.
The details
Good to know
No technical skills needed, but good general fitness helps. Train with hikes and cardio beforehand.
The dry seasons — January to March and June to October — offer the clearest, most reliable conditions.
Marangu is the only route with mountain huts instead of tents — simple, shared, dormitory-style bunk rooms rather than private ensuite lodging.
Twice-daily health checks, emergency oxygen, and a full acclimatization day at Horombo are built in as standard.

Questions
No. Marangu is a non-technical trek on a well-established path — there's no rope work or climbing skill required. The main challenge is the altitude, which our 6-day itinerary and acclimatization day are designed to manage.
It's Kilimanjaro's oldest and most developed route, historically known for its hut accommodation and reasonably easy access to drinks and snacks along the way. It's also the only route where the descent follows the same path as the ascent.
A senior guide dedicated to your climb, an enhanced crew ratio, elevated mountain dining prepared by our lead chef, premium hotel nights in Moshi, and private vehicle transfers throughout. The route and hut accommodation on the mountain itself stay the same as the standard Marangu climb.
Simple, dormitory-style bunk rooms shared with other climbers on the mountain, not private ensuite lodging — huts are the same across all Marangu departures. Send us your dates and we'll confirm current hut arrangements for your group.
