Gentle trail on the Marangu Route on Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro · Marangu Route

6-Day Marangu Route Climb

The “Coca-Cola Route” — Kilimanjaro’s only hut-accommodation route, with a gentler gradient and a built-in acclimatization night for a stronger summit attempt.

6 days / 5 nights Summit 5,895m Moderate from US$1,750 / person

Overview

The only route with a bed waiting for you every night

The Marangu Route is Kilimanjaro’s original climbing path, and the only one where you sleep in mountain huts instead of a tent — dormitory-style bunks with a mattress, at every camp from Mandara to Kibo. It follows the same trail up and down, which means no surprises: you’ll walk sections twice and know exactly what’s ahead on summit night.

We run it over six days rather than the rushed five, adding an acclimatization night at Horombo Hut. That extra day matters — it gives your body time to adjust to the altitude before the push to Kibo, which is why we don’t sell the 5-day version at all.

Every climb is led by our senior local guides, supported by a well-cared-for crew, and carries emergency oxygen and daily health checks — so you can focus on the mountain, not the logistics.

Day by day

Your 6-day Marangu itinerary

1Day

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

~8 km3–4 hrs1,860m → 2,700mRainforest

After your morning briefing and transfer to Marangu Gate, a gentle, well-graded trail climbs through dense rainforest to Mandara Hut, where you settle into your first night of hut accommodation.

2Day

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

~12 km5–6 hrs2,700m → 3,720mMoorland

The rainforest thins into open moorland with heather and giant lobelia. Mawenzi Peak comes into view as you climb steadily to Horombo Hut for the night.

3Day

Acclimatization day at Horombo Hut

~5 km3–4 hrsDay hike, return to 3,720mMoorland

A short optional day hike toward Zebra Rocks or the Mawenzi viewpoint keeps your body moving while you acclimatize. This extra night is the key advantage of the 6-day route over the rushed 5-day version.

4Day

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

~10 km5–6 hrs3,720m → 4,700mAlpine desert

You cross the barren, high-altitude “saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks to reach Kibo Hut, the final stop before summit night. An early dinner and rest follow — because tonight, you climb.

5Day

Summit day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Horombo Hut

~21 km12–15 hrs4,700m → 5,895m → 3,720mArctic → moorland

You set off around midnight for the steady climb to Gilman’s Point and on to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — for sunrise. After summit photos, you retrace your steps down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.

6Day

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, and transfer to your hotel

~20 km5–6 hrs3,720m → 1,860mRainforest

A final long descent back through the rainforest to Marangu Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. We then transfer you to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need climbing experience?

No. Marangu is a non-technical trek — there’s no rope work or climbing skill required. It’s also the most gradual of Kilimanjaro’s routes, which makes it a popular choice for first-time high-altitude trekkers.

Why choose the 6-day over the 5-day Marangu?

The 6-day route adds an acclimatization night at Horombo Hut. That extra day gives your body more time to adjust, which meaningfully increases your chance of reaching the summit compared with the rushed 5-day version — which is why we don’t offer it.

What are the huts actually like?

Simple dormitory-style bunk huts shared with other climbers, each with a mattress. They’re basic but solid shelter from the weather — a genuine step up in comfort from a tent, though you should still bring a warm sleeping bag.

How cold does it get on summit night?

Summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We’ll give you a full packing list, and warm gear is available to rent if you need it.

Is the price per person?

Yes. The exact figure depends on your group size and dates — send us an enquiry and we’ll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote.
