African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Lemosho Route + Zanzibar
Summit Africa’s highest peak on the scenic, less-crowded Lemosho Route — then fly straight to Zanzibar’s white-sand beaches to recover. One seamless 11-day trip.
Overview
The Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west, starting deeper in untouched rainforest than the busier eastern routes. It’s quieter in the early days, crosses the wide, dramatic Shira Plateau, and follows the same “climb high, sleep low” pattern via Lava Tower that gives climbers a stronger chance of a comfortable summit.
Most climbers fly home directly after seven demanding days on the mountain — tired, undernourished, and straight into a long-haul flight. We build the trip differently: land back in Moshi, shower and rest one night, then fly on to Zanzibar the next morning. Three full days on the beach, with an optional Stone Town excursion, turn the climb into a proper holiday instead of an ordeal you fly home from.
Every climb is led by our senior local guides, supported by a well-cared-for crew, and carries emergency oxygen and daily health checks throughout.

Trip highlights
Day by day
After registration at Londorossi Gate, a short drive brings you to the trailhead. A gentle first day climbing through dense, untouched rainforest — noticeably quieter than the eastern routes — to your first camp at Mti Mkubwa, “Big Tree Camp.”
The forest thins into open moorland as you climb onto the western edge of the Shira Plateau — an ancient collapsed volcanic cone with sweeping views back toward Mt. Meru.
A relatively flat, scenic crossing of the Shira Plateau itself, with your first clear views of Kibo’s summit looming ahead. A gentler day, built for acclimatization.
The key acclimatization day: you climb high to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. “Climb high, sleep low” helps your body adjust ahead of summit night.
The day starts with the iconic Barranco Wall — a fun, non-technical scramble with huge views. A shorter day to Karanga Camp, your last stop before the final push to Barafu.
A short climb to Barafu, then rest through the afternoon before setting off around midnight for the long climb to Stella Point and on to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After summit photos, you descend all the way to Mweka Camp.
A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. We transfer you to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower, a real meal, and a full night’s rest.
A relaxed morning before your transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) for the short domestic flight to Zanzibar. On arrival, we transfer you to your beach resort — the rest of the day is yours to rest.
A full day with nothing on the schedule. Swim, sleep, read, or book an optional snorkeling or sunset dhow excursion through your resort.
Explore Stone Town’s UNESCO-listed old quarter — narrow alleys, spice markets, and centuries of Swahili, Arab, and Indian influence — or simply stay on the sand. Either way, this day is yours to shape.
A final breakfast at your leisure before we transfer you to Zanzibar Airport for your onward or international flight home.
The details
Good to know
No technical skills needed on Lemosho, but good general fitness helps. Train with hikes and cardio beforehand.
The dry seasons — January to March and June to October — offer the clearest climbing conditions and the best beach weather on Zanzibar.
Twice-daily health checks, emergency oxygen, and the Lava Tower acclimatization stop are built in as standard.
The Kilimanjaro–Zanzibar flight is short and arranged as part of your package — no separate booking needed.
Secure your dates and let us handle both halves of the trip.
Questions
No. Lemosho is a non-technical trek — there’s no rope work or climbing skill required. The main challenge is the altitude, which this itinerary is built to manage.
Seven demanding days on the mountain leave most climbers exhausted. A night to recover in Moshi followed by three days on the beach turns the trip into a proper holiday, rather than an ordeal you fly home from straight off the mountain.
It’s a short domestic flight from Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), arranged as part of your package. We handle the booking and the transfers on both ends.
