African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Lemosho Route
Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and remote approach, crossing the wide-open Shira Plateau on the way to one of the mountain’s highest summit success rates.
Overview
Lemosho approaches Kilimanjaro from the quieter west side, starting deep in the rainforest before opening onto the vast Shira Plateau — a genuinely dramatic stretch of high-altitude scenery few other routes offer. Because the route is longer and gains altitude more gradually, it consistently ranks among the highest summit-success routes on the mountain.
Our 7-day itinerary keeps the classic Lemosho profile intact: rainforest, the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, the Barranco Wall, and a full acclimatization arc before summit night. It suits climbers who want Kilimanjaro’s best scenery without sacrificing safety margin.
Every climb is led by our senior local guides, supported by a well-cared-for crew, and carries emergency oxygen and daily health checks — so you can focus on the mountain, not the logistics.

Trip highlights
Day by day
After registration at Londorossi Gate, a short drive brings you to the trailhead. You climb gently through dense, untouched rainforest to Mti Mkubwa — “Big Tree Camp” — your first night under canvas.
The forest thins into moorland as you climb toward the edge of the Shira Plateau. Views open up dramatically as you reach Shira 1 Camp, with the summit visible for the first time.
A relatively gentle day crossing the vast, otherworldly Shira Plateau — one of the most scenic walks on the entire mountain, with Kibo’s summit dominating the skyline ahead.
A key acclimatization day: you climb high to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. “Climb high, sleep low” helps your body adjust ahead of summit night.
The day starts with the iconic Barranco Wall — a fun, non-technical scramble that rewards you with sweeping views. A shorter day to Karanga Camp for a well-earned rest.
A steady climb to Barafu, the summit base camp. You arrive early, eat well, and rest through the afternoon and evening — because tonight, you climb.
You set off around midnight for Stella Point and on to Uhuru Peak for sunrise. After your summit photos, you descend all the way through Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, where you receive your certificate and transfer to your hotel.

Good to know
No technical skills needed, but good general fitness helps. Train with hikes and cardio beforehand.
The dry seasons — January to March and June to October — offer the clearest, most reliable conditions.
Twice-daily health checks, emergency oxygen, and Lemosho’s naturally gradual profile support one of the mountain’s better success rates.

Questions
Lemosho approaches from the quieter west side and gains altitude more gradually, which is why it consistently ranks among the highest summit-success routes. It’s also less crowded on the lower slopes than Machame.
No. Lemosho is a non-technical trek — there’s no rope work required. The main challenge is the altitude, which our itinerary and pacing are designed to manage.
Summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We’ll give you a full packing list, and warm gear is available to rent if you need it.
Yes. The exact figure depends on your group size and dates — get in touch and we’ll give you an honest, all-inclusive quote.
Absolutely. Many climbers pair the climb with a Serengeti safari or a Zanzibar beach stay, all arranged by our team as one seamless trip.
