African Safaris Hub Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro · Machame Route
Kilimanjaro’s most popular and scenic route, with an extra acclimatization day built in for a stronger, safer summit.
Overview
The Machame Route — the “Whiskey Route” — is the most popular way up Kilimanjaro, and for good reason. It winds through five climate zones, from lush rainforest to arctic summit, delivering some of the most dramatic scenery on the mountain.
We run it over seven days rather than six, adding a crucial acclimatization day at Karanga Camp. That extra day is the difference-maker: it follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle and gives your body the time it needs, which is why the 7-day version has a noticeably higher summit success rate than the rushed 6-day option.
Every climb is led by our senior local guides, supported by a well-cared-for crew, and carries emergency oxygen and daily health checks — so you can focus on the mountain, not the logistics.

Trip highlights
Day by day
After your morning briefing and transfer to Machame Gate, you begin climbing through dense, lush rainforest alive with birdsong. A steady first day brings you to Machame Camp for your first night under canvas.
The forest gives way to open moorland and giant heather. A shorter but steeper day, with the summit coming into view as you cross onto the Shira Plateau.
A key acclimatization day: you climb high to Lava Tower (4,630m) for lunch, then descend to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. “Climb high, sleep low” helps your body adjust and sets you up for the summit.
The day starts with the iconic Barranco Wall — a fun, non-technical scramble that rewards you with sweeping views. A short day to Karanga Camp, this extra night is the acclimatization advantage of the 7-day route.
A steady climb to Barafu, the summit base camp. You arrive early, eat well, and rest through the afternoon and evening — because tonight, you climb.
You set off around midnight for the long climb to Stella Point and on to Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — for sunrise. After your summit photos, you descend all the way to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.
A final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate. We then transfer you back to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper celebration.

Questions
No. Machame is a non-technical trek — there’s no rope work or climbing skill required. The main challenge is the altitude, which our 7-day itinerary is specifically designed to manage.
The 7-day route adds an acclimatization day at Karanga Camp. That extra day gives your body more time to adjust, which meaningfully increases your chance of reaching the summit compared with the rushed 6-day version.
Summit night is the coldest part of the climb, often well below freezing with wind chill. We’ll give you a full packing list, and warm gear is available to rent if you need it.
