Trek comparison

Kilimanjaro vs Everest Base Camp & other great treks

How the Roof of Africa stacks up against the world’s most famous treks — and how to choose the one that’s right for you.

The big question

One of these treks lets you stand on an actual summit. That changes everything.

Everest Base Camp, the Inca Trail and the Annapurna circuits are extraordinary journeys. But there’s a difference worth understanding before you choose: on most of them you trek towards a mountain. On Kilimanjaro, you stand on top of one.

At 5,895 m, Uhuru Peak is the highest point in Africa and the summit of the tallest free-standing mountain on Earth — reached on foot, with no technical climbing, in about a week. Here’s how it compares.

And the rest

Kilimanjaro vs other famous treks

Each of these is a bucket-list journey in its own right. Here’s how they differ from a Kilimanjaro climb.

Machu Picchu ruins on the Inca Trail

Inca Trail

Peru · ~4 days · high point 4,215 m

A short, history-rich trek that ends at Machu Picchu, with far less altitude than Kilimanjaro.

vs Kilimanjaro: lower and shorter, but it’s about ruins, not reaching a summit.

Himalayan peaks with prayer flags on the Annapurna trek

Annapurna Base Camp

Nepal · ~7–10 days · ~4,130 m

A classic Himalayan teahouse trek through villages and amphitheatre peaks.

vs Kilimanjaro: lower altitude and lodge comfort, but again no true summit.

High alpine plateau surrounded by cloud

Mount Kenya

Kenya · ~4–5 days · 4,985 m (Point Lenana)

Africa’s second-highest peak — quieter than Kilimanjaro, and a great acclimatization warm-up.

vs Kilimanjaro: less crowded; the true summit (Batian) is a technical climb.

Snow-covered high-altitude peak

Aconcagua

Argentina · ~2–3 weeks · 6,961 m

The highest peak outside Asia. Non-technical, but a serious high-altitude expedition.

vs Kilimanjaro: far higher, colder and longer — a big step up in commitment.

Why many choose Kilimanjaro

The most rewarding summit you can reach on foot

  • You stand on a true summit — the highest point in Africa, not a viewpoint or a base camp.
  • No mountaineering skills needed — if you can walk day after day, you can attempt it.
  • Achievable in about a week — far less time off than a two-week Himalayan trek.
  • Five ecosystems in days — rainforest to arctic summit, all on one mountain.
  • Pair it with a safari and Zanzibar — three iconic trips in a single journey.

Being honest

When another trek might suit you better

Kilimanjaro isn’t the right answer for everyone. If these matter more to you, another trek may be the better call.

Everest Base Camp

If you want Himalayan scale, Sherpa culture, and cosy teahouses — and don’t mind that you won’t stand on a summit.

Inca Trail

If ancient ruins and history excite you more than altitude, and you’d prefer a shorter, lower trek.

Aconcagua

If you already have high-altitude experience and want a genuine expedition peak with weeks to spare.

Mount Kenya

If you want a quieter African trek or a technical true summit, or a warm-up before tackling Kilimanjaro.
