Route overview
The Shira Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the west and is the original version of what later became the Lemosho Route. Its defining feature is the start: a vehicle carries you up to Shira Gate at around 3,600 metres, so your trek begins high on the dramatic Shira Plateau rather than in the rainforest below.
From the plateau, the route crosses toward the mountain’s core and joins the classic southern circuit — over Lava Tower, down to Barranco, and up to Barafu for the summit push to Uhuru Peak. It’s a beautiful, relatively quiet line up the mountain, with sweeping high-altitude scenery from day one.
Route highlights
Trek across a vast collapsed caldera, one of the highest plateaus on the planet, with wide-open views of the summit ahead.
Begin walking at around 3,600 m, straight into alpine scenery. A fast way into the high country — and one that rewards good acclimatization.
The western approach sees far fewer climbers in the first days than the busier Machame and Marangu routes.
Joins the celebrated Lava Tower–Barranco path, giving you the “climb high, sleep low” profile that aids the summit.
Day by day
Elevations and distances are approximate and can vary with your exact package and pace.
Drive from Moshi through Londorossi Gate and up onto the plateau to Shira Gate. A short acclimatization walk brings you to Shira 1 Camp, high on the moorland with the summit already in view.
Cross the open expanse of the Shira Plateau with panoramic views, gaining gentle altitude to aid acclimatization before the higher days ahead.
Climb to the striking Lava Tower at 4,600 m, then descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” day is key to a strong summit.
Scramble up the famous Barranco Wall — the most memorable stretch of the climb — then traverse ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp.
A steady climb to Barafu, the summit base camp. Rest and prepare early, as the summit push begins in the middle of the night.
Set off before dawn for the summit, reaching Uhuru Peak — the Roof of Africa — at sunrise. After the celebration, descend all the way to Mweka Camp to rest.
A final descent through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you collect your summit certificate before the drive back to your hotel.
Is the Shira Route right for you?
Because a vehicle takes you straight to around 3,600 m, the Shira Route skips the gradual forest ascent that helps your body adjust. That makes it a strong choice if you’ve recently spent time at altitude, or if you want the plateau experience and a quicker route into the high country.
If this is your first big climb, we’ll usually suggest the Lemosho Route instead — it follows almost the same path but starts lower and walks up gently, which improves acclimatization and summit success. We’ll always give you an honest recommendation based on your experience and fitness.
When to climb
The clearest, driest conditions fall in January to early March and June to October. These windows offer the most reliable weather for the exposed plateau and the best chance of clear summit views. We generally avoid the long rains of April and May.
